1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Latest gas mileage numbers", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have been reading about the low numbers some TS members get for fuel mileage on their Tundra's. Here are my numbers since I picked up my Tundra in February.
Bakersfield to Los Angeles and around town 215 miles 16.80 MPG
Los Angeles to Mojave 105 miles 18.55 MPG
Mojave to Bishop, CA,
around town and some 4-wheeling 298 miles 18.62 MPG
Bishop to Bakersfield 239 miles 20.49 MPG
The highway driving was with the cruise control set at about 63 MPH, which is just below 2000 RPM. My Tundra has a total of 992 miles on the odometer, so I'm anticipating a little better mileage as the truck breaks in more. So far, the fuel cost at $3.252 per gallon (average) is $.18 per mile.
I have a program in my Palm Pilot that computes the mileage every time I fill up. In the last 42,973 miles on my 2001 Highlander, I have averaged 22.98 miles per gallon, and have spent $4,065.81 on gas, with an average cost of $2.186 per gallon, and $.10 per mile fuel cost. I also have a 2003 Camry and after 24,507 miles, my average mileage is 25.14 mpg, at a total cost of $2,124.35 and, at an average cost of $2.165 per gallon, the cost per mile for fuel is $.09. As you can tell, I obviously have a thing for Toyota's!
I can't believe you have had your Tundra since Feb and you only have 900+ miles on it! Sounds like it was all on this one trip. I bought mine in February too and just hit 5K.

Who goes 63 MPH on the highway? I do notice a difference when driving 2 lane highways (55-65 MPH) as opposed to freeway (75-80 MPH), but the best mileage I've ever gotten is aboout 17.5 MPG. Towing my boat I get around 10 MPG. By the way, I like your name. Bishop = Trout fishing?

He might have been in a 55 zone....
I just got back from a trip to Florida from PA. Total mileage for one week was 2300 miles. The best mileage I recorded was 20.5 mpg and I was happy as a pig in sh!t. That was with windows up, no AC and just the blower on the first notch at about 70-75 mph. I normally see 14.5 mpg around town all the time so I was pleased with it.
I noticed that with the AC on my mileage went down almost exactly 1 mpg.

Filled up this morning. 360 miles gone, 23 in the tank. Big chunk was hilly freeway with dirt bike in the back at 80mph. About 90 of it was ~50mph 2-lane highway gentle driving.

As you can tell from my name, fishing is a significant part of my life since retiring. And yes, Bishop, California, is my base for fishing in the Sierra. As to my speed, I have noticed that everyone is driving slower now, maybe has to do with the higher gas prices, especially here in the Peoples Republic of California. The speed limits are usually 65 mph, except a few short stretches of 70. On my last trip, there were CHP (California Highway Patrol) officers all over. In the old days they didn't use radar, but they do now! Highway 395 is notorious for speed enforcement, the skiers heading to Mammoth are usually driving just under Mach 2. Anyway, I was trying to take it easy and give the Tundra a little break-in time, as well as trying to see exactly what the Tundra would get, gas mileage wise, if I drove at a reasonable speed. I am very pleased with the mileage, and maybe next trip, which is a week from today, I'll bump up the cruise control.
Currently consitently averaging 15mpg in my 03 Tundra A/C with 36K reading on the odometer. Oh, yeah and I'm also turning 33" all terrains with a heavy right foot .

Thanks for being honest--I get about the exact same numbers on the highway and get about the same as you when towing my enclosed bike trailer. I've never got some of the mileages with my 05' as reported by some and neither did I experience them with my 03' but at this point I really don't give a ---- as I enjoy the ride!
very early for me, truck is a week old but on the first 2 tanks I got 16.5 and 17.5 with combination of city (30%) and highway (70%) driving. Much better than I expected. Since I am in the breakin period I am easy on the gas pedal
So far with 4000 miles and 11 tanks I'm averaging 15.49 mpg. That is about 80% city 20% hwy. It might be even less than 20% on the hwy, but I can't be sure. I hardly ever get it out on the hwy.
After 7000 miles of mostly town driving, I finally got a road trip from Jacksonville to Charlestown, SC & back. Total miles was 529 & gas used was 24.5 gal. Four hundred miles of Interstate @ 75-80 & the rest a two lane road 55-60. Gas in SC was $2.53. I've gotten better than 19 mpg around town on the previous three tanks since the warm weather hit and I broke 6000 miles & added the tonneau.
Currently consitently averaging 15mpg in my 03 Tundra A/C with 36K reading on the odometer. Oh, yeah and I'm also turning 33" all terrains with a heavy right foot .
ditto, ditto, and ditto...
I get right at 14-15 in my 03 with 51k on the odo, and I too am turning 33's, and I swear, my right foot is twice as big and three times heavier than the other..

I have an 05 DC and run 285/17s in the summer and average around mid 16s for mileage. Have about 3500 miles now. This is a combination 50/50 highway and city. Haven't had a long road trip to check mileage for that as of yet--maybe soon though. Have filled the tank last two times with 89 octane gas to see if that might make a difference as it did in my old 95 Tacoma.
Truck turns about 2000rpm's at 70mph, as some have said to keep it at or below that for best mileage, and I usually drive with a light foot.
I average about 16.5 with my 04 DC, 2wd. Probably 80% around town and 20% fwy. Always have the windows up and the air on, and I don't leadfoot. All stock with the 265/70r16 tires. I haven't had a chance to check it with mostly highway driving but I wouldn't be surprised if it got 19 to 20mpg.
Just returned from a trip to Ohio and back - about 1,700 miles round trip. 2004 AC 4x4 with 18" TRD rims - 70-80 mph av speed resulted in 18.5 - 19.25 mpg.
Amazing range of gas prices - $2.45/gal in Ohio, $3.29/gal in Conn.
Around town I usually get 16 mpg. (only have 14K on the odo)
