1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra 4.7 vs Nissan 5.6", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
The tundra hits its limiter and is around 2,000 RPM's to 2,400 RPM's I think the 5.7 has more top end then the titan does

i will say that the tundra is one bad *** truck off road anywhere towing and load wise.
titan is good truck and i think they good quality and all but if they were no tuundras i'll go with the titan
no you wouldn't! I've done quite a few cat(manifolds) and downstream warranty repairs to these things. 4 a week.
most are out of warranty period as well!

It's really up to you which type of truck you buy because they all have their up's and down's. There's really no one truck that completely smashes all competition. As for me Toyota all the way baby!
Go work at Nissan for a week then you'll never ever consider buying a nissan ever agian.

I've wondered a few times whether I should consider a different truck with a bigger engine, making freeway towing of my boat easier.
Then, all I realize I have to do is MASH the gas pedal!
I think some trucks "feel" like they have more power. Chevys seem to have more low-end torque for example. I've never driven a Titan. But when you slam the gas pedal on a Tundra, it becomes clear that it has plenty of power, you just can't be afraid to use it!
I've decided that if the feds aren't gonna reduce the speed limit to help us save gas, I will reduce my own speed. I've been doing 65 on the interstate and boy the truck just purrs at that speed and I get about 19 doing it, vs maybe 17 when I'm doing 75.
My work Chevy Colorado 4WD crew cab gets about 19 average with its 5 cyl engine. Nice truck all around, I would own one if it had the guts to pull my boat, which it doesn't.

This thread has had several posts over two years so I will add my 3 cents. I just traded in my 07 Titan LE CrewCab 4x2 for my 08 Tundra SR5 CrewMax TRD 4x4. Somebody above said this was and apples to oranges comparision which is true. Tundra blows away the Titan in all areas except the butt dyno. The main two areas I like most are the ride and the interior. I have owned several new Nissans (07 Sentra, 07 Titan, 06 350z, 86 Sentra) and all it took was for us to buy one Toyata (my wifes 08 Highlander Ltd) and now all I own are Toyotas.
Go work at Nissan for a week then you'll never ever consider buying a nissan ever agian.
Really? I used to work with a guy who had previously worked at Nissan, he was nismo to the bone. 'Fanboy' would be an apt description of his attitude towards them.
Not saying your wrong; what exactly is so bad about them?
My dad has an 04 Titan crew cab 4x4 LE and I raced him against my 00 tundra access cab 4x4 and got my arse handed to me. The titan tows better, looks better, plusher interior, and has a kick arse rockford fosgate sound system. The problem is that the quality sucks on the titan and 00 model tundra. Dad's 4x4 tranfers case went out at 42k, along with the AM radio signal. His truck has just as many squeaks as mine does a lot less miles than mine does. I can understand having squeaks and rattles at 100k + but not 48K current miles. He definetly lost confidence in his truck. He has thought about switching back to a tundra or going to an H2 or GMC denali Rule of thumb. Never ever buy a the first model year of a new vehicle or redesigned one. Let the manufacture work some of the bugs out.
The titan engine a lot more powerful than the 4.7 I-force, but the titan engine doenst have near the quality. The new 5.7 tundra engine is more powerful than both and has great quality
The Titan is faster, but only by a couple tenths. It is a seriously heavy truck. Ride quality and refinement is nowhere near the Tundra.
Refinement... good term. Pop the hood of both Trucks and see the detail in material choice and layout of both. The Tundra from 00 to 08 fits the term Refined. The Titan like most Nissan layouts, does have a factor of power, and somewhat reliable stats behind it so say JD power and others. But the term Refined does not apply to Engine detail on the Titan nor most Nissans when placed against a Toyota. And thought into things like materials, along with engine design from in to out have proven a dominating factor in why the 4.7 is dominant.

As stated above, good fair comparison. But all it takes is one.

Yes indeed. My best bud is a Nismo fan boy. Within a month of owning his Nismo Frontier the paint started peeling off like tape. So the truck recieved a new full paint job
he's gone thru 1 rear end
4 alternators
of course 4 belts
1 steering wheel
2 cd players
and a set of bed rail caps
1 wheel hub assy
BUT to him the truck is the best thing of all
and he still has less then 45k on the truck

As people refer to "Top end" power and "low end" power, I think they confuse POWER and TORQUE. There is no such thing as low end power. It is Torque that you feel in your butt dyno. The Nissan being a 5.7L versus the Tundra's 4.7L will always have more torque, thus developing more "low end".
The comparison becomes blurred from 2500 RPM on as the 4.7L comes to life and can give the Nissan a run for its money. Our 5 speed transmission is also a great ally.
From 0 to 60, it is actually pretty close between the 2 but there is more to life than drag racing !
I test drove the Titan 2 or 3 years ago and it felt fine. The Tundra is a bit smaller and a LOT more agile. Our double wish bone suspension kicks butt !. Personally the Tundra was my obvious choice as I don't need a large truck. All I need is to be able to pull my trailer with my race car on it ( Total weight about 4500 lbs) and the Tundra does a great job at that.
The other advantages of the Tundra vs the Titan ( and the F150, Chevy...etc ) is the refinement of the engine, transmission, handling, comfort and of course RELIABILITY.
Cheers !
