1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Where's The Manual Transmission?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Just thinking about a new Tundra when I read the surrvey here on auto O/D transmission problems. I was depressed to just learn their is not any manual transmission available in any new 4 wheel drive Tundra! Why is that?
I'm going to guess. Previous lack of sales in manuals, increased efficiency of the new autos, additional emmission certification for each drivetrain combination?
But still, come on Toyota! Why is a manual available in 2 wheel drive trucks then? There are a lot of people who only want a manual transmission. My friend wanted a new FJ Cruiser but only with a manual. There were none on the local lots so he checked back a few weeks later, still none. Just as he was deciding whether to buy a Tacoma or look at other brands, a truck pulled in with six new FJs. Five were auto but their was one 6 speed which he bought on the spot.
I've only seen the manual transmission on the V6 standard cab 4x2 only. For the 4.7L, it would definitely be cool to see a strong manual with good ratios- the NV4500 would be cool.
We're living in an automatic world, no pun intended. American drivers need that right hand for the cell phone now.

haha i drove stick for years and still held the cell phone in the right hand!
You don't see full-size 4x4 trucks or SUV's w/ a manual tranny anymore. Base engine, regular cab, work truck 2x4 is about it. One reason I got the Tacoma 4x4 Dcab, cause it was the only truck I could get loaded and a 6spd manual (Frontier's 6spd was base model only). Glad Toyota took a page from BMW. Would be cool if they did the same for the Tundra.

Tacoma is not large enough for me, need space for a cooler between car seats in the back seats of the tundra DC

Indeed a 6 speed Tundra would be great, as almost no full size V8 trucks in this segment, other than the Silverado w/ a 5 speed on its lower V8s, has one. All the HD's can be had with them, however.
Ah, back in the day, when you could actually get Tahoes/Suburbans with sticks.
