I am thinking about buying a 2006 Tundra 4x4 Double Cab and I checked these forums about this subject. It seems there is a wide range in reported mileage. I would like to know who is getting the better mileage? Does the access cab get better mileage than the double cab? They have increased the horsepower on the double cab in 2005 or 2006 from 245 to 271. Do Tundras with the increase horsepower get lower gas mileage? I think this is why some people report lower mileage because of the increase in horsepower and the added weight of the double cab. What does everybody think about this?
If you are buying a truck as a daily driver and do not regularly use the truck as a truck, get a car. All the 1/2 ton truck get about the same mileage. If you need a truck the Tundra V8 mileage is similar to the big 3 1/2 ton small V8 full size pick-ups. If you want slighly better milage, get an access cab with a V6.
I have actually managed 9 mpg pulling a loaded trailer into the back country.
The high on the return trip from Montana was close to 16mpg but I was loaded and running 80 mph coming south.
I imagine if you drive sensibly and keep your foot out of it it would be better.
Stock 04 AC 4x4, 271hp v8, getting 18mpg on cruise if I stay at or below 60mph, mileage falls if that is exceeded, tested on a 100 mile trip each way. Buddy's 03 gets the same. I don't know if our gearing is the same but the rpms are comparable, and my 04 supposedly has a higher output then his, unk for sure.
I have an 06 4x2 and cant get any higher than 16.9 per gallon w/regular gas. It doesn't seem to matter whether its city or highway (as long as I baby it and keep it under 70).
The minute I get over 70 or put a little foot in it you can watch the needle move.
My first tank only yielded 14.3 mpg : 2wd, light-footed on the pedal, 80% stop 'n go city driving, usually with A/C on cuz it's been 85+ degrees since getting the truck 2 weeks ago. Haven't done much freeway, hope it improves some with time/hwy driving/no A/C....otherwise love the truck.
I average just over 20 with my 04 DC, 2wd, on the hwy if I keep it under 70, if I go over 70 it drops to about 16. Around town I average 16. Pulling my jet boat at 65 it still gets 16. I always have the ac going. I don't do jackrabbit starts and try to keep it under 3000 rpm when accelerating.
I have an 05 regular cab 4WD with just over 4000 miles on it. In town I'm getting 11-12mpg. Highway driving gets me 13-14 running 70 to 80 mph. If I keep it at 2000 rpm I can expect 14-15. Best ever was 16.9 and that was following a friend in his motorhome pulling a horse trailer. Highest speed was 45 at best.
It seems the newer trucks with the upgraded 271hp and double cab get around 14 to 16 mpg maybe 17. The tacoma seems to get about 16 to 18 miles maybe 19. I was wondering if anyone who bought the Tundra wish they had bought the Tacoma? Do not include the gas mileage since the Tacoma gets better mileage.
I have a 2006 DC 4x4, I bought the Tundra instead of the Tacoma because of the longer wheelbase, better stability for towing an RV and also because the seating in the Tundra was supposed to be more comfortable than the Tacoma.

Have an '05 DC 4x4 w/7800 miles, Bakflip folding cover (no effect on mileage) and Banks exhaust (ditto). Average 14.5-15 mpg in town, w/low of 13.5. Highway 15.5 mpg - 17.5, w/high of 18.5 when it only had about 1000 miles on it (go figure?!). Usually have windows down and sunroof open in town, a/c on on highway, and usually run 70-75 on the highway, while babying it in town.
Don't drive it frequently enough to determine the reasons for differences in mileage from one tankful to another, although I have a sneaking suspicion that it may have something to do with the weight of my right foot.
I've got 5400 miles on mine and I'm averaging 15.37mpg with a low of 14.77 and high of 15.85 -- all city. I've yet to take it on the highway for a trip.
I get 150 miles per a half tank. I am not really even sure what the tank size is. I have only partaily filled it twice
My 2006 DC 4x4 is only 3 weeks old and I do not have a bed cover of any kind so I am fighting the break in period and the wind at the moment.
If you watch Myth Busters on the Discovery Channel, they had a program on pickup trucks and gas mileage. They actually found out that a pickup with an open bed w/tailgate up, got better gas mileage than one with the tail gate down. A vortex was developed in the bed of the truck that acted to lubricate the wind past the tailgate of the truck, reducing the drag and increasing the gas mileage. Cool
I think when you do the math (+ or - 2 or 3 MPG at 20,000 miles per year) your talking about maybe $450-$600 total difference per year in fuel costs. While I don't claim to have extra money to burn, I just think it makes more sense to have a vehicle that best suits your needs, saftey expections, and general enjoyment of ownership.
My buddie has a 4 cyl 4 speed manual Honda, and claims to get 36 MPG on the highway. Thats great, but those 18 wheelers look HUGE to me when I'm riding with him.
What size tires do you guys have? I have a 2006 DC xsp 4x2 with 20"BBS wheels and P295 45 R20 tires. I am quite dissapointed with the mileage on mine. Im currently on a trip from SC to TX. I have filled up 3 times. I got 14.6 the first tank, driving 75-80mph. The last tank I got 15.6 MPG by dropping it down to 70-75 range. I drove it easily on the last tank. So the double cabs are geared lower? I wonder if they gear them even lower to make up for the Wheel and tire upgrade? Im running at 2500rpm at 75 MPH. Does that seem kind of high to you guys?
