I am thinking about buying a 2006 Tundra 4x4 Double Cab and I checked these forums about this subject. It seems there is a wide range in reported mileage. I would like to know who is getting the better mileage? Does the access cab get better mileage than the double cab? They have increased the horsepower on the double cab in 2005 or 2006 from 245 to 271. Do Tundras with the increase horsepower get lower gas mileage? I think this is why some people report lower mileage because of the increase in horsepower and the added weight of the double cab. What does everybody think about this?
There was also a change in gearing in the DC, lower gear set in the rear end (numerically higher) than AC and standard cab. My '01 AC got around 20 highway but this new DC seems to be lower, not checked actual yet and still under 2000 miles.
From what I've gathered, the addition of the extra 42 horses and overdrive haven't "decrease" the gas mileage. However, these additions haven't "increased" the gas mileage all that much either. Only about 1 MPG according to what I've read here on the boards.
That said, my '04 DC (which doesn't have the addition of the extra horses or the overdrive gear) is getting around 17-18 MPG.
Hope that helps... .

My 2006 Tundra DC is 6 months old, I have accumulated 7500 miles. I have a Glasstite cap installed. Adding the cap did not impact my mileage. Mileage between fill ups is around 320 miles.
I have been getting 16 mpg consistently. A recent trip on the Ohio/Pennsylvania turnpike with cruise control engaged resulted in 18 mpg.
I had a 2004 Tundra Double Cab V8 4WD TRD (non-vvti) with 26k. My best recorded mileage was on 800 mile round trip from Burlington, VT to Ft. Dix (Pemberton), NJ. It was 95% Interstate & I estimate my average speed 70+. In other words, I didn't baby it. Also for what its worth, the truck was completely stock except for a soft tonneau. Trip MPG average was 19.6 mpg on 87 rated fuel.
Now I own a 2006 Tundra Access Cab V8 4WD TRD (vvti). I haven't put as many miles on this one, but have tracked fuel and mileage for normal commuting. This has bounced back and forth between 16-18. Again, truck is stock.
Towing with either DC or AC, forget your gas mileage.
Not sure if this helps other than I have owned both a non vvti & vvti in different configurations. Both trucks love gas like trucks love gas. My purchase was driven by its MPG, but that is just me. Good Luck with your purchase.
buy which ever one you want. the mpg between the two is not that big of a difference in my mind. my 06 dc has 5000 miles on it and i check the mileage each time. mine is between 13 and 17. yspert 4x4 dc
My double cab gets around 17-18. I have got 20 on long trips.

All the 05's V8's I have seen are 282hp, and the 06 is 271hp.
Check CarsDirect, and my window sticker!
245 was the original 4.7 V8 horsepower and the later HP numbers are after Toyota added VVTI to the engine. The 282 HP number was before the SAE revised the HP rating criteria and the 271 HP is the same engine after the rating criteria revision. The revision effected most every manufacturers HP numbers some went up and some went down.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???
Some people should not be allowed access to tools without books!!!
People need to make it clear when posting mpg if you have 4x4 or 4x2. Without a doubt, there will be a difference between them. The op has a 4x4 and posting numbers for the 4x2 are misleading. Most folks profile will help you determine this but not all.
I have an 05 DC 4x4 and run 285/70R/17s. I'm getting pretty consistent mileage in the 16s while town driving 40% and highway driving 60%. Highway driving has mainly been on roads in the 50 to 60 mph range. Haven't been out on a long freeway trip since I bought the truck last year, so I'm curious if I could make 20 mpg at freeway speeds.
By the way, I set pressure in my tires at 36 front and 35 rear.
'06 DC Limited 4x4. I get about 300 miles to a tank. 350+ if I'm on a road trip. I believe the tank is 26 Gallons, but when I fill up (when the gas light comes on), it will only take about 20 gallons. So I'm getting somewhere around 15~16MPG under normal conditions. I drive fairly gently but gas it pretty hard once in a while.
