Default Turbo or Supercharger for 2004 DC?

I have a 2004 Tundra 2x4 DC and almost ordered the STS Turbo system today. Theres a custom shop that the company reccomended to me to have the work done. They told me I need to beef up the tranny and they would send me to their tranny ppl, but another guy locally who wants to sell me a supercharger says the tranny isn't upgradable at all. Says it's all computer controlled, tells me the turbo will ruin the tranny really fast, but the supercharger won't. Says the turbo hits real hard compared to the supercharger that will gradually power up. Hope I gave enough info to help me out of this stress of wanting one, but not knowing which to go with.

Thanks
Bill

hmm where shall i start with the BS from that guy...

STS TURBO = GARBAGE
The turbo itself is mounted underneath the bed of the truck!!?!?!?! So all that piping from the intake has to go alll the way from the engine to the turbo, then back to the block for exhaust too... or vice versa.. anyway.. that is WAYYYY too much piping dude... you would get some MAJOR lag.. and if im correct.. sts only throws out like 8-9 psi? it wasnt THAT impressive at all.

False about the turbo vs s/c and the tranny issues. If it has forced induction, its gonna put more stress on everything else to get the truck moving.

False again about trans being upgradable. IPT Performance Transmissions Torque Converters and Transmission Parts for Ford, GM, Chrysler, and Import vehicles

They sell a upgraded valve body that is taken from a toyota truck, beefed up, then installed back into your truck. You wanna talk about awesome boy... your truck will shift so much faster, and it just slams it into gear at higher speeds... all while being 100% as safe on the trans for abuse... Add amsoil fluids.. my friend pay $900 including labor to get his done... only took 1 day.. and man I can't wait to get mine!

The s/c is also cool to have, but gotta be careful with the engine. I hear the 2UZFE comes with pretty weak rods.

As for a turbo setup, the only real problem i see is custom exhaust manifold for a single turbo and on a v8 engine. Can it be done? Sure... you dont want to know how much it would cost to get that fabricated to the T... probly more than the truck is worth lol

I'm gonna stop by the shop where they want to sell me the s/c tomorrow morning and get some more info and ask em about the rods. Alot of info you gave me, greatly appreciated, I'm not even considering the turbo anymore.

Is that tranny kit I can buy from them and have it installed locally? Not real close to Jersey.

Gonna throw some JBA headers, lift, and wheels on next week, can't wait.

Thanks Again
Bill

I dont think they sell the valve bodies. They need yours because they remove it... beef it up, and then throw it back in.

I'm not sure why they dont just stock a couple of them and go from there, but maybe cuz I'm sure not every trans will have the same mileage when it gets the upgrade performed. My friend had like 6K on his truck when he got the valve body done.. even though he removed his powerdyne s/c (didnt want dealership hassles when he got warranty work done) that truck was impressive on 5-6psi and the valve body done...

seems backwards to me what your shop told you. usually, superchargers being pully driven from the crank come on solid at low end. turbos have the lag associated with spooling up as the exhaust gas pressures increase, although this has been largely addressed in modern impellor designs.

I talked to IPT this morning and gotta ship my valve body air to them, turn around is 24hrs, then air back. Should be ok, since truck will be down a few days gettin other upgrades installed. Thanks AFP520 for the info.

go to Boosted Tundras - Powerdyne Supercharger Kits for the Toyota Tundra V8 to see the boosted tundras/powerdyne S/C kit There are pics and dyno sheets posted. The centrifugal S/C does not punish the trans as bad as the TRD one does on launch. Definately get the Valve body upgrade from IPT in Wayne NJ John is a nice guy and they do quality work---you will love the way it shifts and it will greatly extend the life of the trans.

i will attest for rob that his s/c kit is well put together and certainly makes the tundra a beast... there is alot of piping involved (and i'm sure there isnt much around that part) but i saw it in a box, saw rob install it, and saw how well the tundra runs when its tuned properly

With the IPT valve body, and S/C... the tundra is a monster

How hard is it to install this s/c? Looks like it all piping goes together with hoses and clamps. I'm pretty mechanical savy. Do I have to get the fuel management system recalculated after the s/c is installed?

Thanks
Bill

time consuming.. but hard? not really. everything is bolt on... the URD unit it comes with already has a map programmed for your year tundra.. its a generic map that WILL work, but everyone's truck/location is different and its best to have it tuned

Gonna order today. THanks to all who helped with this! Sure am glad now that I didn't order the turbo kit. Cheaper for the s/c when all is said and done too.
