Own an Express conv van, two Silverado's ('96-4x4 and a '02-Z71) and a Camry. The Z71 is starting to nickle and dime me and rides worse than the '96. The rattle noise in the steering mech and the driveshaft clunk has driven me nuts since I bought it in 04 with 55k on it. My front wheels bounce uncontrollably if I hit a patched road crack and the dealer looked at it, aligned the wheels which were 1/2 +1/2 degree opposing, which improved it but it's not like it should be. This past weekend sent me over the top when the driver pwr window cable started fraying and wouldn't allow me to get the window back up. $300 later and I'm ready to trade for a higher quality Toyota product. What's the consensus on the Tundra? Signed, half-Tru2chevy

Ive got 26k on my 04 Access Cab SR5 2wd V8, and no complaints. I beat 5.3 Chevys all day long. I tow a Carson fun runner 16ft toy box to the desert with no problems.

I wouldn't own another GM product if you GAVE me one. I had nothing but bad luck with a 2001 Chevy S-10 and the local "stealer"-ship I had to deal with. I can tell you many stories of the problems I had with the truck, and the dealership.
As for my 2003 Tundra, the only non-regular maintenance type stuff I've had done is the lower ball-joint recall, fuel filler neck TSB, and that is about it. The Tundra has its nuances (mild dash rattles, lack of interior storage spaces for some trim levels), but it is an AWESOME truck.

The Tundra owners whine and complain a bit (especially me), but the Tundra is a solid vehicle. I suggest you take a brand new Silverado for a test drive, then a 2 year old Tundra (just to be fair), and you'll still choose the Tundra. A family friend, a mechanic, has always owned Fords and GMs (I suppose he can fix them), he went out for a ride in my Tundra, and made up his mind to never buy North American again. Just like that.
If you are used to the larger cab trucks, consider the Double Cab, the regular cab and AC are a little cramped in comparison to typical North American trucks.
Rattles? Do you drive on a lot of gravel roads or something? My 04 doesn't rattle or squeak anywhere.
SOME Tundras have a dash rattle that is fixed by a backer rod, or weather stripping along where the window is. Mine I fixed by putting in an aftermarket stereo, as it was coming from around the center console.
I had a door that rattled, but that was fixed after I had an exterior door handle replaced from peeling and chipping.
Even with those small issues, my Tundra is a very solid vehicle, and is well built. Even my mother has commented on how it is the best riding and driving pickup she's driven, and she's driven dump trucks and all kinds of pickups. It rides better in many ways then her 1998 Camry, and ten times better then my Dad's stinkin' F-150.

I traded my '03 Silverotten for an '06 DC last November. Absolutely no comparison. The Tundra outshines, outperforms the Chev on all fronts. It's a shame but GM products are junk.
Ok I have a 05 Silverado 2500 duramax work truck, the only problem so far was a brake booster in 23,000 miles and was covered under warranty. Just ran it over the scales and its sitting at 9420 lbs or 220 lbs or the gvw max. It runs 80-85 mph all day long. Its good for what its designed to do, be a work truck.
Can not wait to get back to shop and hop in my Tundra, there is no comparison between the 2. Tundra feels like a supercharged monster after driving the duramax all day. It is solid with no rattles to speak of. Both get about the same fuel mileage but each serves it own purpose in life.
Depends on what you need it to do. If you're towing more than 6k or hauling more than 1,400 lbs, get a bigger truck. I want a bigger truck, but won't buy a Mexican/Canadian car. If you want to go faster than 106 mph, get a different truck. If you want the best darn 1/2 ton out there, get a Tundra.
I get a chuckle reading posts on the rv.net fora from Titan owners. They have a 9,900 lbs tow rating but the GVWR and cargo capacity are less than a Tundra. They all get PO'd when they weigh their rig and it's 500 lbs over the GVWR and they only have a 6,000 lbs trailer back there. Gotta love the ignorant and the numbers games. Hope Toyota doesn't dork that up with the 2007.

I think he means an American because most American built cars are built in Mexico or Canada.

You simply can't beat a Toyota for durability and reliability. I've been buying Toyota products since the early 80's. I have an 03 Tundra 4X4 with 37,000 miles, and so far zero problems. Before the Tundra i had a 95 4-Runner. In the 8 years that i owned it, the only problem i had was a torn CV boot. Buy the Tundra, you won't regret it.
My Tundra is the same age as your Z, I bought it new in 2002. I have towed with it and I plow with it (only driveways - not the Walmart lot) and drive my 30 mile commute each way every day. Not a single rattle or squeek after 90,000 miles. I have even exceeded the GVW several times when getting stone (1.2 tons) and sand (1.3 tons) from the yard five miles from my house. I was very nervous with more than a ton in the bed, but the truck never complained (though it did squat quite a bit). I also regularly fill the bed with oak for my wood burning stove at home.
The only mechanical issues I've had the the Tundra (transmission and O2 Sensors) were covered by the dealer AFTER my factory warranty expired.
I would not cast dispersions at Chevy trucks, however, they seem to be the best US Badged vehicles available.
