Yeah, you and me both. Best I can get with my 05 access 4x4 is 16 to 17 highway and 10 to 12 city, US gallons. Worse in winter time. I can't imagine getting 20 to 23 highway, that would be like what, 27 mpg in our Imperial gallons, Canada. It must be the elevation/altitude difference or something, we are pretty close to sea level here. I find it hard to believe that a Tundra can get better than the EPA rating. Mine won't come close to that and I generaly take it easy, about 65 MPH on the highway and use the cruise and keep the RPMs at 2000 or less in the city. All I can say is anyone with a Tundra that can get an honest 23 US MPG highway, HANG ON TO IT, that's like winning the lottery.
If you just drive highway, how many kilometers do you get per tank?

My 2006 Tundra 4X4, TRD, Acab, just turned 5,000 miles.. I've been getting 17+ MPG town and 20+ at 60-65MPH Hi way.. I've told others that a tonneau cover would NOT Improve gas mileage... my 2000 Tundra had a tonneau cover and It didn't seem to help the MPG... I installed the Pace Edwards Rabbit tonneau cover last week... today we drove down to Colo, Spgs, Co. from Loveland, Co. Our alt. here Is 5,000 ft.. Colo, Spgs, alt. Is 6,200 ft. going and returning from there you climb to 7,200 ft. alt over Monument hill. Round trip was 232.0 miles. I topped off on our return ..It took 9.96 gallons..= 23.29 MPG..WOW I'm now eating crow.... I believe that the tonneau cover does help the MPG.. I have a lite foot... try to keep the RPM at or below 2000 In town..
Doug
No surprise.. You had a LOT of downhill running. And if running with a tonneau cover is similar to lowering your tailgate, you will get WORSE mpg or not any better.
All I can say for the doubters is get a ScangaugeII.
Then when you can see realtime what a drastic effect even the slightest throttle change has you will understand. For those who always say "but I keep it under 2000 rpms and still get crappy mileage. Yes it is possible to keep your rpms down while accelerating and still get crappy mileage. It takes quite a lot to get our 5000lb truck up to speed. Every time you touch the throttle after you get up to speed, even the slightest little bit has a definite effect on your mileage. Believe me when you can see it realtime you will understand.

I use my scanguage daily. Its a nice tool but Its not practical most of the time. I wont start slow from a light to get .5 mpg more. Doesnt make sense to me. I average 16 mpg. I can live with that. This truck weighs 5000 lbs and has a V8. I understood my truck wasnt a gas sipper long ago. If I want to save on fuel Ill drive my wifes civic.

If you have a K&N or TRD air filter you’ll get slightly worse gas mileage.
I have to disagree with you on this. I have a 2000 AC 2wd V8 with 102,000 miles and an open bed. I bought the truck about 4 months ago and the first thing I did was replace the filter with a K&N. At first, I was get about 15.25mpg all city but I just filled up a couple days ago and I got 15.82mpg. I have used K&N filters in other vehicles and after a 3-4 month break-in period, the mpg started to steadily increase. The only other thing I have done to the truck is replace the plugs.

Be sure to calculate your gas savings and sock that money away for when you need to replace the MAF sensor...

MY experiences. I have a 2005 Doublecab completely stock but with a welded in Flowmaster. V8. I average 18 with a mix of around town and highway. I break 20 mpg's when it is all highway. My trip to and from Vegas with 4 people and gear I got 21. I do not drive conservatively and average around 75-80 on the highway. That puts me at around 2300 RPM's. I usually take off from lights pretty aggressively but not to the floor unless there is a big 3 that needs a whoopin .
As I stated on a few other threads on this topic. This is my experience. I know how to figure out MPG. And you can take it or leave it. It does me no good to lie to others on some internet site. Also there are many variables in what mileage a truck gets and some of us just get lucky in the truck we get.

I average a little over 17 mpg mixed city / hwy, 2006 4x4 DC with 3500 miles. I'm in the "mountains" in Western, NC - elevation between 2-3000 in most areas.
One variable nobody has mentioned is the gasoline you are burning. Different states and regions have different requirements for oxygenates in the gas such as ethanol and MTBE. These are added to decrease pollution, but also have the effect of decreasing mileage. I have noticed an increase in mileage when I travel outside of CA.
I also live in Northern Cal. I occasionally drive over the hills to Reno, Nevada; and I always try to fill the gas tank of my 05 DC V8 with Nevada gas when I'm there. I seem to get another mile or two per gallon.
Let's also consider that the flow meters on the gas pumps aren't always that accurate.

Not sure if I missed it, but how easy is it to clean the MAF (what product), where is it located exactly, and may I touch it with a bare hand? (O2 sensors can give faulty reading when touched with bare hands due to oils on skin)
I have been getting 16-17 mpg steady on the truck. Once I got 18mpg with a 2700lb Uhaul trailer and a motorcycle in the bed while driving x-country on I-70... Filled up outside Denver and drove till idiot light came on somewhere in Kansas... was a bit suprised.

On the tundra your maf in on the top of your air cleaner box and has a clip on wire harness plugged into it. With the engine off unclip the wire and undo the two screws and gently pull it up. There are several electrical cleaners that you can use to clean it off just remember to be very careful with it and don't touch it with your fingers.
