My 2006 Tundra 4X4, TRD, Acab, just turned 5,000 miles.. I've been getting 17+ MPG town and 20+ at 60-65MPH Hi way.. I've told others that a tonneau cover would NOT Improve gas mileage... my 2000 Tundra had a tonneau cover and It didn't seem to help the MPG... I installed the Pace Edwards Rabbit tonneau cover last week... today we drove down to Colo, Spgs, Co. from Loveland, Co. Our alt. here Is 5,000 ft.. Colo, Spgs, alt. Is 6,200 ft. going and returning from there you climb to 7,200 ft. alt over Monument hill. Round trip was 232.0 miles. I topped off on our return ..It took 9.96 gallons..= 23.29 MPG..WOW I'm now eating crow.... I believe that the tonneau cover does help the MPG.. I have a lite foot... try to keep the RPM at or below 2000 In town..

17 & 20 You must be driving a V6.
I'm driving a stripped regular cab with 6500 miles and 17 is the best highway mileage i've seen yet. I average 13 in the city. I try to keep as close to 2000 rpm and that gets me about 68-70 mph.
I did a trip to florida a few weeks ago. I started out with a fillup of mid-grade and went 307.9 miles, took 18.058 gal. That's 17.05 mpg and that is the best yet.
If I keep my foot out of it, I average 17mpg in a mix of driving and can hit 20mpg on mostly interstate. I've yet to do a long highway trip but I'm sure it will top 20mpg. I have some off-brand soft tonneau cover for now.

Yeah, you and me both. Best I can get with my 05 access 4x4 is 16 to 17 highway and 10 to 12 city, US gallons. Worse in winter time. I can't imagine getting 20 to 23 highway, that would be like what, 27 mpg in our Imperial gallons, Canada. It must be the elevation/altitude difference or something, we are pretty close to sea level here. I find it hard to believe that a Tundra can get better than the EPA rating. Mine won't come close to that and I generaly take it easy, about 65 MPH on the highway and use the cruise and keep the RPMs at 2000 or less in the city. All I can say is anyone with a Tundra that can get an honest 23 US MPG highway, HANG ON TO IT, that's like winning the lottery.
I find a lot of the mileage claims that I hear to be very questionable. I got an average of 18 from the 4.7L in my 03 4Runner (weighing nearly 1000 lbs less than my Tundra and with different gears) over 56,000 miles of mixed driving (probably 65% highway). After 4,000 miles in the 06 DC, I've yet to see anything north of 14.5 mpg and I drive very conservatively on the throttle.

Thank you for your post--I agree with you wholeheartedly!! All these great mileage claims make many of us who own Tundras, who keep them fully service, and drive very reasonably feel like they got f***** with a capital F! Like the post I quoted said (and I've said on mpg threads before)--HANG ON TO IT or SELL IT FOR MORE THAN YOU PAID FOR IT as any full size truck getting over 18 mpg is worth a premium!

There are a lot of variables to take into account here!
Different parts of the country have different terrain. Where i live there are alot of hills and no long stretches, all stop and go. I average 14.5 around town and my best highway was 19.2.
I can believe some members getting over 20 under the right conditions.

I hear what you are saying. There is also tire choice (rolling resistance) and pressure. I'm hoping that my mileage will improve with break-in but I'm not counting on it. It's not going to make or break me (otherwise I wouldn't have purchased a full size V8 truck) but I've not seen over 14.5 per tank even on an all flat all highway trip up and down I5 in the central valley of CA. I have a very hard time believing 20+ claims.
My secret is I have 2WD, weigh in under 4400 lbs, have a tonneau cover, use all synthetic fluids (engine, trans, diff), and I have some breathing modifications. I also had a new Toyota air filter in at the time of the test.
My mileage was achieved traveling at 65 mph with the cruise control on and I was about 200 ft above sea level. 22.7 mpg was the best I have ever got with a few 21 mpg in there too.
If I go 70 + mph I値l only get 18.5-19 mpg.
If you have 4WD you値l take a highway mileage hit because 4WD trucks are higher off the ground, weigh more, and have more mechanical parts to move with more inertia even if your 4WD is not engaged. If you have a cap or no tonneau or bed cover you値l have more aerodynamic drag. If you drive with your tailgate down you値l have more aerodynamic drag. If your tires have high rolling resistance you could get up to 2-3 mpg worse gas mileage according to Consumer Reports. I bought tires with very low rolling resistance. If you have low tire air pressure you値l get worse gas mileage. If you have a dirty air filter you値l get worse gas mileage. If you have a K&N or TRD air filter you値l get slightly worse gas mileage. If your 02 sensors are getting sluggish you値l get worse gas mileage. If your engine tends to ping on 87 octane and the knock sensor retards the timing as a result of that you値l get worse gas mileage. If you have bigger tires or a lift kit you値l get worse gas mileage. If it痴 cold outside you値l get worse gas mileage because your truck will take longer to warm up. If you use the A/C or drive with your windows down you値l get worse gas mileage. If you drive with all your lights on you値l get slightly worse gas mileage (the fog lights each are 110 watts!) If the wind is blowing against your truck while traveling you値l get worse gas mileage. If it痴 raining out you値l get worse gas mileage. If you have dragging brakes you値l get worse gas mileage.
I think that痴 it!
