Default Replaced Timing Belt Last Week

All,

I replaced my timing belt over the weekend and wanted to let people who are considering doing the job themselves to know a few things:

1. It's a tough job which requires a lot of patience and time. I ran into a few snags which I will discuss in a minute but plan on taking 12 hours or so to complete.
2. Do not attempt if you are not mechanically inclined. There are a lot of parts involved and if you do not seal a part....like your water pump properly you will be taking EVERYTHING apart again.
3. Did I say water pump? Oh yah, timing belt drives it. If you're replacing the belt, you would be stupid not to do the water pump as well. You have to even take the timing belt off to get to it!! This surprised me!
4. Make sure you have the right tools. Get a Chiltons manual. Make sure you pay attention to the crank pulley bolt removal. You WILL need a chain strap to hold pulley in place while you remove the bolt. If I knew this in advance I would have saved 2 hours.
5.Make damn sure you align the marks on cam and crank properly...Not doing so will at best will require you to redo everything...at worst, major engine damage.

I have to say, after completing the work and turning over the engine for the 1st time I was nervous. Just because it was such a big job. Everything appears to be fine though...

It is def. a big and difficult job, good work, I need to do the same to my truck but luckily I have my old shop to do it in which should cut the time down to about 5-6 hours

Congrats, sounds like a job well done. Sounds like you should be able to do it quicker next time.

Definately would be able to do it quicker next time....I think 8 hrs or so. It was a difficult job but I'm glad I did it instead of the stealer or some mom and pop shop. By the way, like a lot of other people have said, the belt did not look bad....but who wants to take chances??

Thanks for posting this email. I am in the middle of replacing my timing belt on my 4 runner and ...guess what...down to the last part needing to be removed....crank pulley!! and have not been able to figure it out. Now I'll go out and get a chain wrench!! Thx again.

I had mine changed at 90k and the tech did it at his house and charged me 175 including the belt. I did not think I wanted to tackle it!
