All,
I replaced my timing belt over the weekend and wanted to let people who are considering doing the job themselves to know a few things:
1. It's a tough job which requires a lot of patience and time. I ran into a few snags which I will discuss in a minute but plan on taking 12 hours or so to complete.
2. Do not attempt if you are not mechanically inclined. There are a lot of parts involved and if you do not seal a part....like your water pump properly you will be taking EVERYTHING apart again.
3. Did I say water pump? Oh yah, timing belt drives it. If you're replacing the belt, you would be stupid not to do the water pump as well. You have to even take the timing belt off to get to it!! This surprised me!
4. Make sure you have the right tools. Get a Chiltons manual. Make sure you pay attention to the crank pulley bolt removal. You WILL need a chain strap to hold pulley in place while you remove the bolt. If I knew this in advance I would have saved 2 hours.
5.Make damn sure you align the marks on cam and crank properly...Not doing so will at best will require you to redo everything...at worst, major engine damage.
I have to say, after completing the work and turning over the engine for the 1st time I was nervous. Just because it was such a big job. Everything appears to be fine though...
