Default moonroof rattle detached roof beam

I just purchased (Sept 29th) a Tundra 06 DC limited with a sunroof/moonroof from Toyota of Garden Grove. The first day i noticed a rattle when the roof is open to the default stop. If i open the roof all the way back, the rattle goes away. I did not give it much thought and figured if anything came up that needed me to take the truck in for service i would address the moonroof rattle then. However after reading a post (Re: Toyota is replacing my 06 DC)i have found that i too have a roof beam detached from the roof. I can not tell if the roof has lifted or if the beam has dropped. After thinking about it, the beam would have had to be welded incorrectly, to low, for this to happen. The beam (Roof support) is so low it is actually starting to scratch the moonroof glass from opening and closing it. I am taking it in on Monday to see what Toyota of Garden Grove can do for me. Having been an auto mechanic/fabricator and now a engineer. I can not see how they can fix it correctly without cutting the beam lose and then welding it in the correct position. And as we all know things are never the same once they start taking your truck apart to fix things. I am not looking foward to this ride. First new vehical i have ever bought. i have always bought used so the first buyer can go thru this stuff. *!@#:

Oh Man, I knew there had to be more than one like mine out there. Arm yourself with all my info from this site and take it to your service writer and if I can be of any help let me know. If you have the same issue as I did and it sounds like you do. It cannot be fixed without "major" work. Toytoa will make it right I'm sure. They took great care of me with mine. It just took almost 3 months to get the replacement truck.

By the way, you are exactly right about the beam being welded too low. That is what they determined on mine. The beam does have to be cut out to do the repair correctly. They tried to just pull the headliner and sunroof out to reattach the beam and all that did was pull a big dent down in the outter sheetmetal shell of the truck. My supports on my replacement truck don't appear to be attatched all that well either. I will be keeping an eye on them.

Well Toyota has my truck now. They are pulling out the headliner this morning and are going to call me tonight.

Day one, truck in the service department. First I will say the guys at Garden Grove Toyota are being very accommodating and taking great care of me and understand my concerns . They pulled the headliner out and see that there is an issue. They can see where the moon-roof is rubbing on the cross support /roof beam, and where two of the beams are not touching the roof. They called in a body shop who believes that they can, as with Spectra06DC truck, reattach the beams to the roof using an adhesive, which did not work on Spectra06DC’s truck. My observation; While I was there pushing and pulling on things I think the roof will pull down to the beam before the beam pulls up to the roof. Meaning I to will have a low spot in my roof as did Spectra06DC and the moon-roof will most likely still hit the beam as it is to low. Also I doubt the adhesive is going to hold due to the preload of the roof trying to pull itself up to its natural position and the beam doing the same pulling down. If it does hold it will not be for long, physics at work! The service department did not say one way or the other if they agree or disagree. They recommended I let them try to fix it and go from there. If I was to tell them not to try and then go directly into arbitration it would be a much harder road to head down then the one I am hading down today. The service department thinks I should be able to have the 1st repair done by Tuesday night. So there will be more to come. I think I should get Spectra06DC Toyota dealer involved since they have just gone down this very same road. MORE TO COME.

That is exactly what will happen. Roof support is spot welded too low and when they try to reattach the supports it will pull the outer skin down. Let them do what they feel they have to do and in the meantime get on the phone to toyota corporate and get a case # going on this. I was just polite and firm with them that I will not accept a new vehicle back that needs that kind of major repair. My body shop said that to do the repair correctly that the roof of the truck would have to be cut off and supports cut out and repositioned and rewelded. I said great, the next owner will be glad to take it, I for one will not. Now lets get the replacement coming.

I just discovered that a friend of mine has 05 DC limited just like my 06. I ran over and had him open his moonroof and found that his roof beams are nice and snug up agaist the roof skin. I need to go back with a camera and take a picture. I am now 100% sure my truck has a manufacturing defect.

Sounds like you are all over it. I'm really curious to see how and how well they do a "repair". Good that you got a case #, That is step one in the process. You may get a call from someone from corporate like I did just a couple of days after you get your case #. Thats the guy you want to let know that you will want to pursue the buyback/replacement if it is not repaired to your satisfaction also let them know that I had mine replaced for the exact same factory defect. Be sure and look over the roof of the truck from side to side to make sure that is does not have a big dip in it. If you can't really see an indentation I myself would ask that some water be run over the roof to make sure that it doesn't "pool" in a spot that you can't see with the naked eye.

If they even touch that thing with a welder...make sure you get a buyback... The galvanizing is pretty much useless in that spot after you touch it with a welder....you know what that eventually means.

I did not concider the corrosion factor if they weld on it. Great point!

Also I was just reminded that Toyota will not be manufacturing 06 Tundra's in a little while. And i do not want an 07. I need to make sure this keeps moving fast. If they can not get me a 06 Tundra i am going to be forced to get a Chevy!

How did you notice that yours were wrong from the looks? I have a loud clanging noise when I open my sunroof past the first stop. Could be the same issue. I'd hate to take the truck and have them say that it's fine, but don't want to get into more trouble by waiting.
