I have a 2wd Tundra and do some light off road driving and we also get about 2-3 weeks/year of driving in the snow/ice here in NE Oklahoma. I have a 60 mile round trip commute and would prefer to get a set of 4 and just leave them on so if they are aggresive tires I need them to be highway friendly/quiet and wear pretty good. I was considering the Goodyear MT/R based on a post here that said they wear well and are pretty quiet. My dealer is trying to sell Hercules Teratrac AT's for $107.
I am also not entirely opposed to buying a set of snow tires w/ steel wheels for the rear end just for the winter and a good set of AT tires for the rest of the year. I guess I'll just have to do some thinking.
I am also having the dealer install a TRD LSD for about $500 so that should help the little offroad driving we do.
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
Please DO NOT use only 2 snow tires. This is more dangerous than all 4 A/T.
One of the few A/T tires to carry the Severe Snow Duty Rating (Snowflake on a Mountain Logo) are the BFG TA ko's. Even though the BFG's are Severe Snow Duty Rated, they still are not a true winter tire, BFG achieved the rating by adding a compound to the rubber for cold weather applications.
Yokohama Geolander I/T is a good light truck Snow Tire.
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
Put a set of Michelin LTX M/S on and drive. Been there, done that.
I lived for 3 1/2 years at 8,700 feet in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Now, I live in the Oklahoma City area, where I was raised up. With 92,xxx miles on my '00 Tundra, and 64,xxx miles on my wife's '01 Sequoia, we have never been stuck.
Two weeks ago, I went back to New Mexico for elk hunting. Angel Fire had 54" of snow in 72 hours, so snow was everywhere. Part of US 64 from Clayton to Raton was covered with ice and suffered a ground blizzard as I drove through it. I drove at 50+ mph through it, solid as a rock, while other vehicles left and right were sliding off the road into three feet of snow in the bar ditches.
Last weekend, we had three days of sleet, about 3" total. Then it warmed slightly, making the surface wet and really slick. I've been several hundred miles through it with nary a problem. Next, we'll see what tomorrow's storm brings us.
Last December, I went deer hunting in Missouri. About 16" of snow had fallen a week before I arrived and about half of it was still on the ground. It was beginning to thaw, i.e. frozen in the mornings but nearly 40 degrees in the afternoon. I went miles offroad across pastures and such, with the ground surface getting very slick under the snow. I never came close to getting stuck.
And you want them to last? The Sequoia has used 1/3 of the tread in 40,000 miles, which leads to a forecast life of 120,000 miles. The truck has new ones after 69,000 miles on the old ones. They spent lots of those miles on mountain roads where they were nearly always on a curve, which wears tires much more quickly. The cost per mile is pretty low.
Finally, wait 'til you get them on a highway ...
No, I don't have stock in Michelin. But, I won't buy any other brand of tire for my vehicles, and my brothers and I all use the LTX M/S.
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
Wednesday here in Houston we had some icy bridges; it was early about 5 am. I had to cross 3 small bayou bridges covered in ice before they got the sand down. It was slow going but the BFG KO's were steady. I was nervous, but surprised how well the KO's did.
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
Goodyear MT/R they are a great tire. I have had several sets of them on various trucks. Worked great in the winter in CO. Stuck me to the ground. I never slid around. Same goes for mud.
For the aggresive tread they have they are not nearly as loud as most tires like that. Most people who ride in my trucks are surprised how quite it is. And how much abuse the tires can take. I have never had one give out on me. 72,000 miles on my 03 AC.
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
I have about 3000 miles on these tires. The Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor All Terrain tire. I have driven in really deep snow and a lot of rain (I live in Oregon) and I can honestly say that these tires are the best snow and rain tire I have ever had. And on dry pavement, they are remarkably quiet and smooth for an aggressive all terrain tire.
The tirerack.com rates them excellent. Here is a review that I found on the internet. I recommend them....
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
Here in the Sierra Nevada, we get over 500" of snow annually (that's um, 42 FEET ). Almost everyone here (locals, at least) uses BFG A/T KO's on their trucks or SUV's, including me. Best all-purpose tire I've ever owned.
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
My Mich Cross Terrains on my Dodge Ram were excellent. I wish I could have kept them, but when the insurance company totalled it I couldn't swap because I had 17's on the Tundra Best darn tire I ever owned. I did a lot of skiing in Taos New Mexico and getting up the mountain in a snow storm was a breeze. Going over Raton pass into Colorado was a piece of cake while other cars were sliding past I just cruised up in 4wd Of course you wouldn't have 4wd, but the tires grip like crazy and they last a long time.

Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
I just noticed the Goodyear Silent Armors. They sound like a pretty awesome tire. Although in Tejas I deal with deep red clay mud and the MTRs are very good at handling that and the SAs are not to hot in the mud evidently. I have never had any problems with ice or snow when I am in Colorado. As long as I drive within the limits of the weather. I have never slid.
Re: Good Recommendation for AT tires good in snow/mud
I had my Toyo Open Country a/t's in the snow the other day. I tried to make it spin in 4wd and it only would under full throttle. I was really surprised at the snow grip these tires had. Maybe NC will get more snow so I can write more about it.
