1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "cold air intake system", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Im looking to put a cold air intake system on my 2004 tundra dc. what im hearing is that the only smog legal intake is afe system, is that a fact or im I hearing the wrong things. I would like to go with k&n 77 series.
Im looking to bring up my fuel milliage with my gibson cat back and and the cold air intake system.
One last thing is there any cons to using a cold air intake.

Yes, the con is that these things are a complete waste of money. Its all marketing hype kept alive by message boards where others who have wasted money feel the need to justify their decisions by proclaiming their purchases result in more power and better fuel economy. The only thing you get is more intake noise. I have tested these things on dynos and there is no measurable difference in power.
I have noticed pros and cons to this intake (K&N FIPK). It is great on the highway and makes a lot of noise...we all know that. It loves the cold weather too; makes good use of it.
BUT, on a hot day from a stop my truck is a dog. It does suck in too much hot air and is terrible. So, that being said, as of right now I love my intake because of the weather and the fact that I am not towing. But if I was towing, or maybe even come this summer, I may take it off because it does sacrifice "low end grunt"
Do some searches and you'll find all the details you need; including all the different brands to choose from. Good luck

Another con is that the oil from the filter can come off and coat the MAF sensor, causing problems ranging from check engine lights to lower mileage and other things. Typically this doesn't happen as much with the filter "out of the box", but happens usually when people clean them and re-oil the filter too heavily.
