Default 1/8 mile run at the track

I went to the local race track last night with a buddy who regularly races his 1990 Mustang GT. I've never been to a drag strip so I wanted to see what it was like along with all the other street cars and bikes. Needless to say, they convinced me to run my 05 Tundra on the 1/8 mile for a time trial and for the heck of it. A lot of guys were offering advice on how I should do a burnout first and other starting tactics. However, I just went for putting the pedal in the floor method since it's all I knew I could do.

Needless to say, my Tundra ran the 1/8 mile in as low as 10.24 sec (the highest time was 10.34). I know nothing about what a good time is but some of the track regulars said it was a good time for a naturally aspirated 4 door truck. I never ran side by side with another comparable truck, but I did see other comparable trucks run at around 10.9 - 11.2.

I guess some of the guys never have seen a Tundra run or maybe never seen one run well. I'll probably go back again some other time to give it another run.

My 05 AC 2wd ran the 1/8 mile in 9.66 and the 1/4 mile in 14.9@92mph. No mods except 91 oct gas and I took the spare off. My time slip is in my photo gallery. Cheers.

Wow, that's awesome. I don't know what my reaction time was. I didn't know I could get a slip, I just saw the time flash up on the post at the end of the run. I plan on going back again since now I have a better idea of how it all goes especially the timing of the starting lights. I'll repost after the next time.

I think the Tundra is better suited to 1/4 mile tracks as opposed to 1/8 mile tracks because the 4.7 tends to be more of a high rpm performing engine compared to two valve pushrod designs. At the track this translates to a weaker launch off the line, but better performance on the big end.

I very much agree as my Tundra was still pulling very hard at the 1/8 mile mark. I'm seeking a nearby 1/4 mile track and will post once I find one. If anyone has any tips on how to get the best start, please let me know. I'm pretty naive when it comes racing strategy on a drag strip. Thanks.

In case there are any Mustang enthusiasts, my friend's best time was 7.22. There was also a Duramax out there that ran an 8.9. Geez!

Diesels are easy to mod these days, unlikely was that one stock, but they are all impressive compared to a short while ago. Look for black smoke on some of the chipped ones.

Ever go against a Hemi? They kill me off the line, but I catch and pass them. A 1/8 mile would not be long enough to catch them though.

They get me off the line, but not by much (a Quad Cab that is). However it doesn't take long for the catch and pass. Most of the times I ran on a HEMI, it was on a punch from around 30-40. You know what happens there...

i ran a 9.43 at 74 mph in my 05 single cab. only mod at the time was a muffler. that was good enough to bet my friends dodge ram hemi that had an exhaust, intake, and chip at the time. i think his best run was a 9.52.
