I'm not an internal combustion engineer but...the generally held theory is that higher octane fuel will not produce more horsepower without higher cylinder compression to take advantage of it.
I'm a member of several vintage racing lists and this conversation comes up frequently - and there are engineers and professional racing engine builders on those lists and they seem to agree on that theory...
