I have used K&N air filters on my vehicles, for several years. I don't find them to be a source of any problems. The basis for their technology is simply an oil-wetted cotton gauze-type of media. We used oil-wetted excelsior-based, aka "oil bath", air cleaners for many years. Seems to me that the gauze material is a lot finer meshed, than the excelsior that was in the old oil-bath air cleaners.
Nowadays, there are several manufacturers who have essentially copied the technology. So, in addition to the red filters from K&N, there are yellow ones and blue ones, from other manufacturers. I have used them on Honda, Fords and GM products, as well as my Toyota's. Got one on my Tundra and on my '69 Chevy. Gonna put one on my Lexus, next.
As for oil filters, I don't use anything but a Toyota filter, on a Toyota engine. Call me whatever you want, but that's just what I do. I had a concern a few years ago, with a NAPA Gold filter that seemed to loose its' "prime" when parked. My local store didn't sympathize with me, and I haven't bought another NAPA filter, since.
