Thanks to all who responded and for the advice. I just bought the car a few months ago and the seller told me that he had just replaced the HG so there could be more issues than he wanted to mess with and that's why he dumped the car. If I pull the head and camshaft like you suggested, how do you adjust the clearance with the cam removed? If there is major damage to the head, do you know of a good source to buy a rebuilt and approximate cost? TIA for your help.
