Hi, Just bought a used '04 Limited 4wd V6, awesome vehicle. After numerous Jeep Grand Cherokees, a 97 Land Cruiser, etc this is such a well thought out vehicle it continues to amaze me. I understand the advantages of a K&N filter power wise but how does it affect mileage? Thanks for any advice.
i am strongly against K&N filters. When I installed it on my another car (bmw325i) it just gave me a much worse mpg. Acceleration was not improved at all. I will never install it on my 4Runner.
Instead, i buy a new air filter (genuine) and replace every 10k miles together with cabin air filter. They are only about $15 on internet.
x2 for using OEM air filter. I've used K&N before, but never noticed any performance increase. I use stock Toyota air filters and my truck idles and runs best with them.
I don't think that the problems associated with the filter oil coating your MAF sensonr are worth the hassle. You may want to look at a complete intake system if you really want to improve performance.
Just my .02.... I've used K&N filters for the past 15 years in vehicles ranging from my Buick Grand National to my current '03 4Runner. I've never experienced a problem using the filters. The oil on the MAF sensor people speak of is a result of improper oiling of the filter itself. Periodicly, you have to clean and reoil the filter. if you use too much, it will bleed through and enter your intake. Not a problem if you follow the directions.
As far as power / MPG....it varies from vehicle to vehicle. I noticed no difference when I put one in the 4Runner. I noticed a significant difference with the Buick. From what I can tell, I'd say that todays intakes / OEM filters are designed much more efficiently than those in the past. Switching to an aftermarket filter / intake in most late model vehicles usually yields minimal benefits...
If you want a reusable filter, get the Fram SynWash instead. The K&N is made with cotton fibers. Even if it's oiled properly, the cotton fibers break off (it's lint after all) and they get baked onto the MAF hot wire.
The SynWash is made with non-woven polypropylene. PolyPro attracts dust and dirt and holds it until you spray it with dishwashing detergent. Let it dry and then reinstall.
There is no performance or fuel economy gains to be had with a K&N. Stick with the OEM filter.

The only real benefit to a K&N IMO is that they are reusable. Maybe Im just lazy, but Id much rathar take the old filter out, throw it in the trashcan and put a new one in rathar than washing, letting dry and the reoiling and hoping that you didnt put too much oil on the filter (too much oil fouls out the MAF sensor).
To me, using the OEM paper filter is just much less of a hassle.

clubted, hey there I have K&N's in both my 05 Tundra and my 03 V-8 4Runner, my 06 Harley and wifes 03 Lexus. they work great I have been using them for over 20 years in numerous vehicles....the only time you'll have a MAF problem is if you over oil it when cleaning...and that isn't a problem either as all it takes to clean the MAF is a q-tip and some CRC Electronic cleaner...I have only had to do this once in a 2000 SR5 4Runner. IMO they are worth the money and they have improved the mpg in my vehicles with I compute everytime I fill up...not much but a 1 to 1 1/2 mpg over a year or two and they pay for themselves not including the first time you clean it, it has paid for its' self....my .02..CSM-H

I installed the K&N on my 05 Tundra a year ago and have not had any problems, gas mileage and acceleration improved just a little. Not much but something is better than nothing
Ghetto Prez. Sorry I don't have the answer, no experience with the TRD filter. I have been using K&N in multiple vehicles for over 20 years with no issues. If the TRD filter says it's reusable, (you clean it with a cleaner and reoil) then it may be the same, don't know. But if you're buying (don't already have the TRD) then get a K&N and be done with it. Just be sure when you clean it in a year or so, depending on your driving and milage, DO NOT over oil it....Good luck, hope that was some help. CSM-H
