Loud engine / Engine Noise

I purchased a pre-owned 04 4runner sr5 (46,800 miles).

I find that when I start my truck, the engine is very loud...like it's idling pretty high. When I put it in drive, the engine sound drastically goes down and it quiet for the duration. I notice this engine noise everytime I start my vehicle. Suggestions

Also, I hear another noise which sounds like a gear turning or winding sound??? It's a strange analogy, but I must compare it to they way a ice maker sounds on a refrigerator...when the water is being supplied to the ice maker. It sounds like that in my truck. The sound occurs when I start the vehicle and last for about 30 seconds. Periodically, I may hear the same sound while at a stop light. Suggestions

That is normal operation of the brake force distribution feature on all 03 and newer 4runners. Read your manual for more info on this safety feature. The high idle is also normal at start up especially when cold.
