I have read several posts, and it is unclear as to whether the starter is on the driver or passenger side of the vehicle on the V6 SR5. I have not started looking yet, but am wondering if anyone can give some insight on where it is located and how to access it. The goal is to pull it and either replace the starter, or consider replacing the contacts. I appreciate anyone's input that may have tackled this in the past.
Great, thank you! So is it accessible from the bottom of the vehicle, or is there some sort of access panel in the wheel well? I did read something about an access panel, but I believe that it was an earlier generation 4Runner. Also, if from the bottom, does the skid plate need to be removed prior to removal? I appreciate your help.
I would give you the instructions from the repair manual however they are not very good ( I will throw them in here so you can see). All they say is remove 2 bolts and starter. It will have to be done from under the vehicle there is no access panel. You can remove the skid plate it will make it easier to get it out.
Another thing if it is a 4WD it is signifcantly harder. There is more stuff in the way. You have to loosen the rack if it is 4WD.

OK great. Yes, it is 4WD and the 3.4L. I'm not that knowledgable with the rack and loosening it. I'll have to take a look and consider my options I guess. I was hoping to be able to do it on my own, though I'm not sure at this point based on what you said. I appreciate your help with this.
Ok, I have a 98 4Runner V6 4WD, and assume the starter removal procedure is similar? I am on my way outside right now to begin. What is the rack? And I assume this model does not have wheel well access either? Any other tips greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ok, here's the second question, what is the easiest way to remove the wire going to the starter, (not the one bolted one), but the wire that plugs in. Never seen a connector like that before and have no idea how to remove it... Thanks..
OK, gotter. No problem. Came out through wheel well access, just loosen 2 brake line holders, and unsnap from 3rd holder, move brakeline out of way, no need to disconnect, as there is a mulit-loop in the line that allows for a flex point. Comes out backside first, not nose first, through wheel well. May take some maneuvering to get it there though. Didn't even need to take the tire off either. Easy as pie.. Took me 1.5 hours to remove.

Just a thought for you. 2 years ago, quite often I would get nothing when turning the ignition key. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Finally, it was just plain nothing. I had heard about corrosion on the main wire connection to the starter. I turned the wire connection bolt from below and heard a slight crack. I figured, what the heck, and reconnected the battery, turned the key, and it fired right up. And its been firing up each and every time since then.
I was thankful, as it was rapidly becoming apparent that it would be a knuckle buster getting it out.
Most of the articles on starter removal mention that you should eliminate all possible corrosion on the connections.
So maybe you should check on that possibility.
