Default When should the 1st oil change be on a new engine

I was always taught to change the oil the 1st 1000 miles to get all the metal shavings out, some people change it at 500 or even 200 and then another 1000 miles later.

Both my Honda Leaf Blower and my Snapper Snow Blower said to change the oil after the 1st 5 hours of use.

But in the Nissans I've had and the Toyota I have it only says to take it easy for the 1st 1000 miles but not to change the oil, so is changing the oil so soon just a waste.

Opinions on this range all over the lot.

I favor an oil change at maybe 500, maybe another at 1000, then the normal schedule of 4000-5000 miles. This way you know that your engine is really clean.

In your area, I'd use 5W-30 in the winter and 10W-30 the rest of the year. I like Chevron Supreme, Castrol GTX, Pennzoil, and Mobil Drive Clean oils among the standard oils. For filters, I like Toyota, Purolator Pure One, Mobil 1, Bosch Premium, WIX & NAPA-Gold, Baldwin & Hastings. Synthetic oil--Mobil 1. Synthetic blend--Schaeffer 7000 (none of the other blends are worth the money, and the Schaeffer oil gives results equal to Mobil 1--I know one guy in the oil analysis business who has 12,000 miles on Schaeffer 5W-30 in his Honda CRV, and testing it every 1000 miles just to see how long this oil is good).

I'm not sure when to get the 1st change, but 2nd at 4000. I just hit 4000 miles and went with the TRD filter and Mobil 1 SuperSyn synthetic.

A Toyota service manager told me that changing before 5,000 miles is a waste. They actually advised me against doing so even though it would have been money in their pocket.

If there are any metal shavings that get in the oil the filter should pick that up anyway.

Save your money. You're not doing the engine any harm by going with the manufacturer's recommendation.

Im still unsure if I should just leave it but in all the manuals I ever read it never said anything about changing the oil early.

I guess from here on out I'll just leave the oil in till the 1st recommended change not like anything is gonna happpen differently "still gonna be burnin in my brain but I can do it

I came across this Break in Secrets http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm this dude recommends changing the oil on your bike at 20 miles a little extreme cause I and my friends always did the 1st change at 600 miles.

Like I said this is for bikes and I have yet to email him and hear him comment on cars/trucks

I still don't see a difference between regular and synthetic except price, is the motor with synthetic gonna last that much longer than regular

I found this on yotatech

Synthetic vs Standard motoroil

Don't know how much I believe it cause I have worked on engines and seen engines with over 100k that looked brand new and seen ones with 30k that looked done

Ryan,

Delvac 1 is Mobil's synthetic oil for diesels and gasoline engines. Rotella Synthetic is from Shell. Mobil Delvac 1 is the better oil.

Submit a suggestion to your company...if you get a bonus...that they can save money with Schaeffer #700 15W-40 synthetic blend oil (25% PAO synthetic). It'll give about the same service as the full synthetic oils and cost a lot less. There's a testimonial from a trucker who has 1,200,000 miles on his engine with Schaeffer #700, and it's finally due for an overhaul.

Schaeffer's #703 10W-30 synthetic blend (20% PAO synthetic) will also give you equal protection to Mobil 1 in your Tundra's engine and cost less.

Big Rig engines and bike engines are nothing like the engine in a regular passenger car/truck as far as maint. is concerned. Comparing recommended service intervals and lubricants between the three is like comparing apples to oranges.
