This is a discussion thread titled "My Runner turns off", within the 4Runner forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Yesterday it happened about 3 times, that I accelerate my runner (3.4V6) harder than normally, and when i took my foot out of the gas it turned off...
Does anyone knows why did that happen? Maybe there is a problem with the fuel pump, or something...
Thanks
Sergio

Sergio,
I had the same thing happened to my 2000 LTD 3.4 a few years back only when I start it would happen; no CEL would come on but when I took it in to the dealer, they diagnosed it as the Idler Speed Control Valve (ISC) going bad. Once they replaced it, no problems ever since. Costed about $250+. Hope this helps.

Yes, it's probably the idle control valve, but you don't need to replace it. I hate to tell the second poster, but the valve can just be cleaned and all will be fine. It takes about 20-30 min., and $5 in CRC cleaner. You should also clean the MAF while your in there. Here is what I typed in another post:
I had starting problems on my '01, but it would start after the second try. It turned out the MAF and the idle control valve were dirty. The oil from the TRD filter coated the MAF and gummed up the idle control valve. After cleaning both parts with electronic parts cleaner for the MAF sensor and intake cleaner for the idle control valve, the truck started perfectly every time. And it ran better, got better gas milage, and idled smoother.
Yeah.. small, greenish (hard to tell, I'm color blind) plastic gismo just below the throttle body. Has two phillips screws holding it in.
To clean it you remove the greenish plastic housing, you can rotate the actual valve. It should rotate very smoothly, if not it's dirty. There should be a hose right below the valve, remove this. Then spray intake cleaner through the top of the valve (seen through the opening the the throttle body) while rotating the valve. You will see the cleaner come out of the tube that you pulled the hose off of. You might want to put a towel to soak up the cleaner. After a while you should feel the valve rotate very easily.
