Default A/T or Torque Converter?

I`ve got a 1994 4runner V6 4WD 4 speed. Having A/T overheating problems. I have changed the fluid and filter, cleaned the tube through the radiator and now suspect the torque converter. How do you know for sure if the converter is locking up when it`s supposed to? Also, can the torque converter be drained directly?
