Default 60K Valve clearance

Is it necessary to do the valve clearance check for 4.0 V-6 at 60K? I have a 2004 4runner Sport 4WD with 58,000 miles, any thoughts and opinions.
THanks.

Well I'm not sure about the V6 on the 4Runner cuz I have the V8. But we have a 1Mz-Fe V6 on our 2004 Camry and at about 60K miles we had some minor valve noise and slight pinging on hills. So I took it to the local independent shop for 60K service and they recommended valve adjustment, apparently the Imz-Fe motor has shims that get replaced if the clearance isn't right on the valve. All I can say is it cost 380 bucks for the adjustment and 13 of 24 valves were out of whack. But what a difference, the car is runs like new and the engine is as quiet as can be. New iridium plugs probably helped too. If you aren't having any noise or pinging I would agree not to sweat it though.

Most owners (well the 16-25 year olds anyway) figure that even if they gain noticably more power, fuel economy and engine smoothness, they're still left with a boring stock motor. So that's why most won't spend money on valve clearance checks. Ditto in regard to oxygen sensors.

I priced the valve adjustment on our '03Runner at 60k miles. SM stated the book calls for about 17 hours. He said don't bother unless there is a problem. I had them put in the maintenance file that in their opinion no adjustment was needed.

Engine now has 145k miles and has no misfires, and fuel economy has not suffered (I watch that like a hawk.). I read somewhere that generally the Toyota shim method should be good without adjustments for 200k miles at least.
