4RunnerGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota 4Runner.
This is a discussion thread titled "ABS Actuator? Any idea on price? 94 4Runner", within the 4Runner forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Hey, fellas...I'm an 07 Tundra guy, but I'm looking at a '94 4Runner for my son who's about to head North for college. I found one that looks really good, but says it's only problem is that it needs an ABS Actuator. He claims he had the Toyota Dealer replace ALL the brake lines after an emergency stop last year that shredded his brake lines and blew fluid everywhere. They apparently told him it still needed a new ABS Actuator. Anybody know how involved that swap might be? Junkyard part? Any help would be appreciated.
I had a 93 and from from what I remember looking at the actuator the physical swap would probably be easy. The actuator uses the power steering pump to pressurize it so there would be 2 power steering fluid lines and a couple of brake lines to re & re. The bleeding procedure is more complicated and according to the manual requires a special tool, probably a dealer only deal.
As for buying an actuator they were only used up to 95 so any used ones would be at least 13 years old. I don't know if I would trust brake parts from a wrecker that old. I 've no idea how much a new one would be but I'm guessing lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$.........
Hey, thanks for the heads up, ETR. Turns out we passed on that '94 4Runner and stumbled on a '98 model that had the newer 3.4L and the rest of the goodies that came with that newer generation model, so we're pretty happy. I saw a post from Mt.Goat on the YotaTech forum about swapping that actuator for the brake line from a non-ABS model (which was mfg'd during that same period) and bypassing/ doing away with the ABS altogether, which sounded like a good tradeoff. No expensive part and no more chattering, crunching, ABS brakes. Never could stand ABS.
How's that '01 treatin' ya? Loved my 2000...just couldn't stop jonesin' for the '07 upgrade, so I pulled the trigger. Some days I miss the "mid-size" nature of that '00. Nothing wrong with that 4.7 either.
I know what you mean about ABS, that's about the only complaint I have with my 01, it's a bit too sensitive. Other than that it's great. I swapped the 93 for the 01 about 3 years ago and going from the old 3.0 to the 3.4 was a huge difeference. Better acceleration and better fuel economy as well. I think you made a good choice with a 98 instead of a 94.
Funny...when I read your first reply, I mistakenly thought you had an '01 Tundra - since this is obviously TS, right? That's the reason I mentioned the 4.7L V8. Anyway, now I get that you stayed faithful to the 4Runner line. We were glad to get the '98 over the mid-90's models. So much cleaner...not to mention the performance issues you alluded to. So you def. get better mileage with the 3.4 over that 3.0...or as I saw a guy call it: the 3.slow??? We drove the '98 home from Dallas the other night, started with a full tank and 200 miles later were just under three quarters. I can't wait to see the real numbers...but it's looking like even with the 4WD, it's gonna be over 20 on the highway. What do you get?
When I first got it I was getting 22 - 23 mpg on the highway, and maybe 20 around town. Now with the suspension lift, TJM bumper, winch and bigger tires I'm averaging around 17 -18 overall. I just replaced my air/fuel ratio sensor last week so I'm hoping that'll go up by a couple. I'm also planning to regear soon so that'll help too.
