Default Cost to Replace/Repair Rear Differential HELP

I am hoping someone can tell me the cost of replacing or repairing the rear differential for a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner. I was quoted close to $2000 for a used differential plus labor.

Does that sound accurate or am I getting ripped off?

Nothing broke but I had this sometimes loud whirring noise that only happened when I was driving. It was intermittent 2 days ago but now it happens anytime I drive and sometimes the noise is louder and sometimes it sounds like something is just going to fall of the car if I dont pull over. No lights come on but, I took it somewhere to be looked at and they said my rear differential needed to be replaced. They said that there are metal scrappings in the oil and that eventually if I continued to drive the car the back wheels could lock or the noise would get so unbearable that I wouldnt want to drive the car.

$2000, you are getting ripped!!!

I'd say under $1000 to have everything done. Parts alone about $500-$600. $200-$400 for labor.

For the labor cost, contact another TS member by the name of MikeDonofrio. If he is still in NJ, he might be available to help out.
