4RunnerGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota 4Runner.
This is a discussion thread titled "front brake rotors and pads", within the 4Runner forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Hi, I want to ask you guys for your opinion about the replacing my front brake pads and rotors as they are needed to be replaced. My Toyota dealer quoted me for about 800+ CAD for the entire work with parts. The reason also why I'm not willing to spend that much money is because I'm looking into new car anyways but I would have more piece of mind to have a new brakes but not for the price they quoted me.
I was surfing the ebay and I found some good deals, but I'm just not sure if the rotors and pads off ebay are a quality build, I dont want to risk my life for couple of bucks. I dont want to go cheap cheap with this and gone bad, but I do think that my dealership is just charging me too much for something that could be made cheaper with comperalable quality. Do you have any suggestions about the brands I should look or any sellers that are a good one ? Most of the sellers I was looking for are good on feedback, and they offer 2 front rottors for about 100$ + shipping and 50+ shipping for pads. I would welcome any suggestions, coz I'm completly lost in this.
I would avoid after market pads because they tend to squeal and make a lot more dust than dealer parts. $800 sounds like a lot. Unless your rotors are warped or are thinner than spec you don't need to replace them. You should be able to get by with just replacing the pads. The pads should cost around $50 and take about 15 mins to replace. You may want to check with local repair shops. They can still get dealer parts.
X2 on the aftermarket pads, I've tried many brands over the years and now I only buy pads from the dealer. I find them to be the quietest and cleanest.
For $800 I hope they supply the lube, that's steep for a brake job, considering I could do it do it in an hour in my driveway.
Like Rob said you can probably get by with just replacing the pads. If there is no shaking in the wheel when breaking then the rotors are probably not warped don't need replaced.

I do have a shaking in the wheel breaking so I do need those rotors to be replaced. Also what is strange, since I bought my 4runner, my front calipers were seized, I did warranty repair on the right front wheel now they found out that the other wheel is also with seized calipers. And they recommend me to replace the rotors as well if they will replace the calipers.
I still dont know what to do with those routers, I will get the pads from dealer but those rotors are quite very expensive
You should be able to resurface the rotors. At worst, pick up a set at you local auto parts store. They will be a lot less than dealer rotors.
They replaced only one caliper? Wow, I would be furious. You should never replace just one caliper. They are always replaced in pairs.
If it were me, I would take it to the dealer to get the caliper work done if it is under warranty then take it somewhere else for the rest of the brake work. If they are doing the caliper under warranty then you should only have to pay for the parts (pads and rotors) since they will have to take everything apart for the caliper. That should bring the price down a lot.

They need to replace it in pairs ? I never knew that, they only told me that I need to replace one after I was complaining about 6 times till they figured out what was the problem with the brakes. Now I went to the other dealership and they were checking my brakes called me and told me that they are needed to be replaced and that my calipers are seized, so they need to replace them too.
I had the same symptoms with my wife's 03 4Runner and all it's needed is the rotors resurfaced and pads replaced. This has been done 2x over the past 80K miles.
I just put the 231mm larger calipers loaded and Tundra rotors on my 3rd Gen for about $350 in parts. Online Auto Parts and Auto Accessories Store at PartsAmerica.com hard to say if your early 4th Gen 4Runner has the 199mm calipers. Mine had the even smaller 149mm? No more shaking!
Both my calipers were seized when I did my brake change a few weeks ago. SOunds like it is pretty common. I got reman parts, new rotors and new pads from my local shop, not the dealer. The stealer wanted $380 for each caliper. OUCH! As long as you get good ceramic aftermarket pads, they are as good as the factory pads. Yes, if you get the cheapo metallic pads they will produce a lot of dust, squeak and all that. I got the good pads for about $60 a pair, rotors were $60 each and painted on the inside to minimize corrosion, and then the calipers were like $140 each. Put everything on, bled the brakes and they work great. Its an easy change once you have the right parts.
One thing to note, my 2003 SR5 came with 17 inch rims, but my brake parts were for the 16 inch rims. DO NOT GET THE BIGGER ROTORS. They won't fit. If in doubt, take the old ones off and measure the diameter. I had the hassle of buying, returning, reinstalling which added to time and frustration.
Glad to see I was not the only one caught by the 17" wheels and the 16" brake parts. I purchased the rotors only to discover that they were too big for my 2003. At the same time, I discovered I had seized calipers. I ordered the calipers from my local parts store who asked what size wheels it had. When I got home, I found out that I now had calipers which were the wrong size for my original rotors. Luckily I had the larger rotors on hand so I swapped out both giving me the calipers and rotors that should be on a 4Runner with 17" wheels.
