Needed a new starter for the old 1990 4x4 4Runner so off to the dealer I go. Get a call and they says I needed an auxilary starter relay - be about $300. Anyone know what that's all about? Mine is a manual transmission - already has a starter relay. Last time I has a starter installed there was no 'auxilary relay' mentioned. Comments/thoughts?
never heard of an auxilary starter relay? Ask them where it goes? so i can look for it

Apparently they added a NPN-TIFCO Starter Relay at 19.95, a NPN-TIFCO Wire Harness at 29.70, and a 90982-05035 Terminal Assy, Batt for 22.30 and some labor to install. This is after I made a big fuss over the initial estimate. The tech said something about resistance and not enough voltage getting to the starter. It looks like they added this for a more direct connection to the battery????
Then if there wasn't enough voltage to the starter, then why didnt they fix it?
Adding a relay is a band-aide for a real issue.
Usually it's the aftermarket alarm or the Electrical part of the iginition switch or the starter exciter wire has a bad end on it (they get hot and melt).
