Default Starter is going out on 88 4Runner

Our starter is acting up pretty bad and appears about to quit on our 1999 4Runner V6, and we'll be trying to arrange an appointment ASAP. At 97k miles, it is also due for a timing belt and water pump. Depending on their schedule, it may be better to just get the starter looked at and delay the other.

Any idea of cost of replacing starter contacts? The whole starter? How long might the dealer take (could we wait)?

Thanks.

Shouldn't be more than 1 hour of labour to re & re a starter, especially for a dealer tech. If you can pull the starter yourself the contacts are easy to replace.

Definitely do them yourself if you are in the least bit mechanically inclined. I just replaced mine on a 2000 4Runner. Bought contacts on ebay for a few dollars. When they arrived, it only took a couple of hours to drop the starter, replace the contacts and reinstall. You'll save some money and the experience is well worth it.
