Default check engine light code 22

my check engine light came on. code 22, coolant temp sensor. my temp gauge works fine. should i change out the sensor?

Not sure what year your 4 runner is or if it is a 4cyl or 6cyl, but....

There are 2 sensors for the coolant.
SENSOR 1 is for the water temp gauge = works fine

SENSOR 2 is for the ECU to know thw coolant temp, this is the one that set code 22.
See pdf for daignosis.

Yes, usually the sensor is bad, or the vehicle is low on water or the wiring is damaged.

Im not a pro mechanic or anything but you may also want to check the thermostat. On mine it was stuck on open loop and it threw a code for temp. I know yours says sensor but just throwing it out there being that thermo's tend to go out more than a sensor.
