Default Vibration in a 1998 4Runner

I bought this truck brand new in 1998 and haven't had a single problem with it. I have 261k miles on her. Friday night I noticed some vibration when I accelerated from the light. I happened for about 1/2 a mile, then I took it out of overdrive and it began to go away. I put it back into OD, and it never came back until Saturday. Saturday it got worse. It happened for about 2 miles but went away.

The vibration happens when I am accelerating. It feels almost like I am out of gas and is stuttering, but it has plenty of gas. I am afraid it's a transmission problem. Has anyone else had this issue or ideas of what is going on?

sounds like could be bad u-joints, but could be trans since you say that it goes away. Hope for u-joints they are a lot less expensive than a trans.

Have the U joints checked. Friend of mine was lucky to avoid a bad accident recently when his failed on the highway at speed. His was vibrating consistently though and had been for a while. He had let it go and almost paid the price. His eight month pregnant wife was in the car at the time.

Bluedog007

Just went through the same thing. Changed out the rear U joint and big problem solved. Still had a bit of vibration so pulled the drive shaft out again and lugged it into local drive shaft shop. It needed a bit of straightening as well as a bit of balancing. Slipped it back on Thursday night and we're running sweet again.

With these Toyotas, it seems to always turn out to be the simple things that go wrong. Finding them is the real problem.

Good luck with your challenge,

Joe
