The 'new engine strategy' is a HUGE mistake, IMO. It was a big deal (and smart move) when they added the V8 to the last gen, now they're taking it away...? Surely they sold more V8's than V6's during that run. Trail Edition with the new 4.6L V8 would have been the ticket...with KDSS and the other goodies probably wouldn't have seen the need to wait ~ 5 years for the new Land Cruiser to drop down under $40K.
Ah well...maybe it's just jerking people around with a marketing gimmick in order to manufacture a big splash down the road with something they could easily (and should) offer today, a la the CrewMax Tundra with 6.5' bed...
With all the FJ-esque styling cues (which I like...best redesign of all the recent Toyota SUV makeovers IMO), now wonder if rumors about the FJ going away are true.
Toyota probably will put the 4.6 V8 later. Its been heavy on the web that they will put it in a Lexus GX. Prado(Lexus GX) and Hi Lux(4Runner) is not that much of a difference basic design and engine bay dimension. I am going to wait until the Summer next year but the vehicle doesnt look too bad though.
The Trail edition looks great and the fenders and wheel wells of the new Trail edition do share some styling cues with the FJ. It also appears reminiscent for the FJ Runner, http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2240/...9799abae13.jpg
I think it looks great but do wish they had offered it with a V8. Hopefully they will stuff the new 4.6L V8 under the hood and then it will be set. The other nice thing is the increased ground clearance to the FJ's current ground clearance of 9.6 inches.

They have also gone with part-time 4WD on the SR5 and TE, Torsen center diff and full-time 4WD is only on the Limited. Another huge mistake and, along with no V8, a deal breaker for me.
Needs the 4.6L V8 and 6 speed auto (even better put the 5.7L in there!), and the AWD torsen transfer case as used in the last generation 4 Runner.
No V8 = not many people going to buy one. With all the car-utes out there in the same size range, with the same towing performance as the V6 4Runner there is little need to buy the 4Runner. On the other hand for people that want a really capable SUV they will want to tow more than 5K and they will also appreciate the extra grunt of a V8 off road too. Toyota is missing the boat here if they don't offer a V8. Do they really think people that buy a 4Runner are obsessed with fuel economy?

I think you're right CD, prolly not going to sell many with the 4.0 V6. I thought they would retire that engine since it's been around for 7 years - the '03 4 runner. The 4.6 V8 will probably get better gas mileage anyways. My '05 Taco with the 4.0 didn't seem to do good with the gas mileage.
They have made some useful power upgrades to the 4.0L V6 as it now pumps out 270hp and 278lb-ft of torque. Now that is all fine and dandy, and they should start putting that thing in the Tacoma and Fj post haste because it will be a nice upgrade for both vehicles. For that matter it is not a terrible option for the 4Runner either, but it shouldn't be the top engine. The problem is not so much lack of horsepower (it does make 10hp more than the old 4.7L V8) it is lack of low end torque compared to a V8. The new 4.0L V6 makes that 278lb-ft at 4400 RPM's whereas the old 4.7L V8 made 330lb-ft at 3400 RPM's, so even though peak horsepower is higher for the new V6 at peak engine speeds, the old V8 made more horsepower at real world engine speeds. For comparison at it's peak torque the 4.0L V6 makes 233hp at 4400 RPM's, and the 4.7L V8 is making 213hp at 3400 RPM's. Now I don't know about you but I don't often have the engine in my truck spinning away at 4400 RPM's, but a quick jab might give a downshift to put the revs around 3400 RPM's.
Not that comparisons with the old 4.7L V8 really matter anyway. The real comparison would be with the new 4.6L V8, which enjoys an advantage both in peak horsepower (310hp at 5600 RPM's) and peak torque (327lb-ft at 3400 RPM's). So the 4.6L will churn out significantly more power all over the RPM range and would have enough torque to push out the second overdrive gear in the 6 speed auto. I'll wager fuel economy would be virtually the same between the 4.6L V8 and the 4.0L V6.
What the hell is Toyota thinking on this one? Are they thinking?
Yeah, even Consumer Reports reckoned that they would have a 4.6 option for it. i'd like to see that motor in a tacoma - that would be a sweet little truck.
I'd really like to see the 5.7L in there.....not even sure that the external size of the two V8's is all that different. Hell the 5.7L V8 makes 274hp by the time it reaches 3600 RPM's.... yeah that's right, it makes more horsepower in the middle of it's operating range than the 4.0L V6 makes at peak RPM's....
I just stumbled across 4 2010 4Runners in person in Richmond BC, at the shipping facility. They were all LTDs and the body looks great in person, better than pics, front a little odd, but overall the truck looked good and had a presence. The huge wheels made the LTD look a like a cartoon. Took a few pics, but there is probably nothing that you haven't seen already.

Those wheels suck. Seriously what is the point of putting 60 series rubber on a truck? Well other than bling, and making it less capable of actually going off road.

I heard through the grapevine that Toyota took the most senior employees laid off at Pontiac and put them in charge of design and marketing for the North American market.
(just sh*tting in case you're wondering, but hmmm..... )
