I recently did head gaskets on my 4runner as the engine was leaking coolant into the cylinders. The truck has about 175000 miles and I have finaly put everything back together and on the first attempt to start the truck it turned over but died almost immediately. It would not start again so I did a few things such as removed plugs, checked for spark, cranked out the fuel that may have been in the engine and the dang thing almost turned over again this morning but again just won't run. I am afraid that perhaps the chain may have skipped a tooth or I missed something. The enigine sounds like it is turning slower than normal on cranking but I think that may be lack of running so far.
The computer is logging a code of throttle actuator control .... and I have had a look at it but I dont see anything wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for? all the sensors and grounds, etc. seem to be attached and I looked around for a good hour. I have also tried to see if the engine cranks by hand typically (i.e. hard soft, hard soft through the 4 strokes) and everything seems normal and it feels like it is building compression.
In case anyone is wondering how this worked out, the timing was out and I had pushed out the tensioner too far on my first try. I fixed the timing and the truck now runs like new again.
Glad you got the problem solved... I just caught this thread and as I was reading your first post I was going to reply with "check the timing" but you seem like you got it all figured out on your own. Enjoy your "new" truck!

It runs like new but I encoutered a small problem, there is no throttle response. There is a code that throttle motor/actuator is not functioning properly. I think it has something to do with the ground as there seems to be power at the end of the harness but no ground. I am hoping it is just a small problem but it is strange as the ground comes directly from the ECM according to the schematic. Hopefully someone reads this that has had this issue and can help.
Check the ETCS fuse and the right cylinder head ground wire for the ecu.
The ecu supplies 5v to the VC wire on the thrttle motor and the E2 ground thru the r/cyl head
