3.4 conversions have been done extensively on old toyota trucks, Taco's, etc... most ppl do it on manual tranny trucks, cause there is less work with wiring. there are problems with the TACH working correctly, oil dipstick placement changes in the new engines, etc....

I havent seen anyone else do it in a 90-95 4runner yet other then myself.

we have 2 90 4runner SR5 4wd auto with 99 5vzfe s/c swaps. with TACH's working correctly, cruise control working, working speed sensor, etc...all working good. custom modded tranny for better shifts.

The 3.0 liter V6 is a very durable engine with traditional Toyota reliablility. I have over 230,000 miles on one. However, its gas mileage is nothing spectacular and neither is its power.

yeah, my cousin's 90 4runner had over 250k miles on it before we swapped in the 3.4. its been running for about 9k miles now and is getting 17/18 mpg with supercharger.

mine has about 190k when we swapped the 3.4 s/c in.

What was the first year for the 4Runner? Which years did it have the lift off top, so it was like a convertible ala Isuzu Amigo?

Cool. Im gonna look for a cheap '89 on down just to have a cool convertible to drive in the summer. I dont think they are easy to find though. A guy down teh street has one and he says its his "baby."

I believe the 1st year was '85. '89 was the last year of the removable top and 1st year to offer a V-6. I have an '87 with over 350,000 miles and it's still running. One note, the top is a pain in the a$$ to get off. There are a ton of bolts and screws you need to remove.

Is it worth the pain though? I doubt Id park this puppy in the garage, with my tundra and malibu in there. But I wouldnt want to put the top back on every night either. Its probably gonna take me a while to find one, but maybe Ill look for an '89 so I can get a V6. Otherwise someone said the '85 is good cuz its fuel injected and has a solid rear axle.

It was great having it off in the summers, but I haven't taken the top off in over 5 years. I've also heard of leaking problems after you put it back on, but never had them myself. You can also get one of those soft covers that replace the removble top.

All 4Runners had a solid rear axle, the 85 was the only one w/ a solid front axle, so it is a little better off-road.

OK Ive found a '93 in my area. V6, 4WD, loaded (says the classified), $4850. No mileage listed. I think Ill opt for a newer one rather than a mid 80's rustbucket. Ill call tomorrow to get details. Ive read that the 3.0 is a gas guzzling dog, but better than getting rear ended in a tercel all the time!

IS there a time limit on head gasket recalls? Ill ask the seller if its been replaced on this one...
