157hp and 178lb-ft or torque backed up with a 4 speed? In a 4,295lb vehicle? Hello 11.5 second 0-60 times. Have fun getting that pig up to highway speeds.
This seriously has to be the dumbest thing I have seen Toyota do in a long long time.
I get an SUV lease every 2-3 years for work. Was thinking of swapping my Pilot for the 4runner early next year. Not being that familiar with details of current 4runner, how much of a 'downgrade' are you guys thinking when you look at this 2010 press release. Six cyl wont pull this puppy around town / open hwy? thanks

I agree, 4cyl in that thing is not the smartest thing to do especially it is not that fuel efficient (If that what Toyota trying to accomplish). I own 2000 4Runner before and the Asian Hilux Surf Turbo diesel (The same truck with I-6 diesel turbo) when I was on the other side. They are kind of specialty vehicle so I dont think they are for everyone to own and like. Give it a year Toyota may stick in the 4.6L V8 in it just like they plan on the Lexus GX. The turbo diesel on the LC Prado/Lexus GX will be sweet too if that is allowed here in the US.
I am going wait until December when I can see the Lexus GX and make comparison. Any member here who have a chance to travel oversea should test drive the LC Prado or the Hilux Surf with diesel - fun stuff.
I've got one on order. Magnetic Grey Limited with 3rd row and Nav. Should have it Mid-December. Will be test driving one in 2 weeks when the dealer has one - just to be sure. Not getting into the debate over v6 vs v8. I suspect it will do everything I need it to do which is a tall task - including commuting 400miles a week (and not killing me on fuel costs like my Suburban), Towing a classic boat (2000lbs w trailer and fuel). Camping. Hauling kids. Road trips. Drag racing is not a line item.
Drag racing isn't really the issue here, the issue is the fact that the V6 is being asked to move 4,805lbs of vehicle with only 270hp and 278lb-ft of torque. Making matters worse is the peak torque not being available until 4,400RPM's; not exactly a formula for relaxed or effortless acceleration. Then again you live in Georgia, which is pretty much flat and you live at only around 1,200ft of elevation so you wont suffer too much power loss from being at a higher altitude.
I'd be interested in your feedback after you drive it for a month of so.
thanks
Considering I drive a 6300# Suburban with a worn and piston-slapping 290hp 5.3 v8, I'm actually pretty excited. My 95 4Runner with the v6 was marginal on performance. My 94 Toyota Pickup with the 4cyl was a true dog. All in all I've had 14 vehicles ranging from track prepped BMWs to rock-crawling Jeeps and a few Suburbans, so I know what's acceptable for my needs, and what is not. I'll report back after the test drive and let you know if there are any surprising findings - good or bad.
