Hello all! I joined this forum because I was considering a Tundra. Now I'm trying to decide between a Tundra and a 4Runner. If I decide to go with the 4Runner, it will have to be a V-8. I am curious how this 5-speed transmission stands up to towing. This would mostly be a trailer with a couple of dirtbikes and a Quad. Eventually, it could even be a small camping trailer.
Also, does anyone have any experience with how well this tranny will hold up to the added power of a supercharger?

I have towed abit more than the 5000# limit on my 03 and have had no problems what so ever. The tranny holds up very well and is very strong all through the band.
I have also towed with a 5.3L Chev Trailblazer and the v8 Ford Explorer and I must say the 4runner felt the strongest! I know that the 04's have the added 7000# limit now so I know towing heavier loads should be a null factor.
You can't go wrong with either Tundra of 4runner btw
And for the SC, the tranny will definitely be able to handle the additional HP/Torque. Actually the tranny should hold up the SC and then some (nitrous perhaps!)

Lance,
They now say 2004 4 runner can tow 7,000 lbs. Were there any mods done to the '04s to allow this? Or did they just up the number??

New hitch.... if you have the old 5000# hitch you're pretty much SOL
Toyota has no intentions of upgrading existing 4runners that came w/ the standard 5000#.
I'm thinking you can probably upgrade the hitch yourself if you want... that is if you are planning to tow 7000#.
That transmission has proved itself to be pretty bulletproof in the LX470. That is Lexus's flagship suv, I am sure they would not make that a weak link. My neighbor has a Lx470 that has 130k miles on it, she hasnt touched the trans fluid in that thing and it still is smooth as silk.

I don't believe that's correct. The 5-speed A/T in the 4Runner V8 was new for '03, leaving buyers the choice of a proven V8 with a newly developed tranny or a new engine (V6) with a proven tranny.
I've put ~5,000 tow miles on our '03 Limited V8 with a 4,000# trailer behind me and had no trouble at all. That includes towing in mountainous terrain and in hot weather with the A/C on.
