I have a question regarding the sensors also. I am looking at picking up an 04 4runner and was wondering if switching up to 18's would screw up the tire sensors.I know I've done it in a customers Pacifica with no prob just didn't know if Toyotahad a different system. Also I haven't seen tire sensors listed in the 4runner brochure is it standard on all and just not listed in the brochure???

Not sure about US models, but TPMS is standard on Canadian models. Toyota sells a 'fitting kit' for about $8 each that contains the grommets to relocated the sensors to other rims. As Toyota seems to use the direct monitoring system on the Runners, I would not think that wheel size would be an issue, as the sensors work on air pressure. (Rav4 are the indirect system, using wheel speed sensors and ABS sensors). Last week, during cold weather, my indicator lamp illuminated. I had 27 psi in the tires, rather than 32. Inflated the tires, lamp went out
we have the same setup on Jeepsandother Chrysler vehicleswhere I work I just didn't notice anything about it in the American 4runner brochures.I would prefer to have it due to the 80% highway driving I do
'04 Rav4 is also based on the ABS speed sensors.
The owner's manual basically says that the system is useless
It actually says that 50% of the reasons for low tires won't trigger, and the system may trigger when there is no problem.
Sure enough, at 230 miles, ours triggered. Hit the reset button and it's been fine since.
How do you reset the tire pressure sensor light if it stays on? Can you do it yourself for the 2004 4Runner without bring it to the Service shop ?

maverick---instructions on how to reset the pressure sensor light should be in your manual. It is on page 181 of my manual ( I have a Sienna)
1)--Set the parking brake.--2)--adjust the pressure in your tires--3)--turn ign switch on--4)--push reset switch, hold until the light blinks 3 times. --5)--reset is complete when the vehicle is driven for a period of 8 hours at a speed of 19 mph or over. ----Buzzard

Thanks for the reply. I thought there was some sort of button you can press to reset the light.

I brought my 4Runner back into the shop last week because my tires were vibrating at 55 mph. The technician tried everything to balance my tires, but it doesn't solve the vibrating problem. So they replaced all 4 wheels and also the tires and that solved the problem. I droved home over the weekend and the tire pressure light start to blink. Took back to the shop and they found out that since these are a complete new set of wheels and tires, the vehicle onboard computer can not read the information from these new set of wheels and tires. The service technician forgot to make the vehicle onboard computer to register those new set of wheels and tires in order for the tire pressure sensor to work with the new set of wheels and tires.
Hey bud,. what every you do not take your car to some tire shop. because they don't know anything about those sensers . they coast about 118.00 each. so if you want to take the tires our you most Clean the edges of the rim . and Grease the edge of the rim and the tire . Also. when you loose the stemp use wd40 because those are alumnim and they brake. good luck.

my daughter has a 04 Rav4. I'm in VA and she is in TN...... tire pressure is OK for the 4 tires on the road. Is there a sensor on the spare as well? If there is a reset button, where is it? ......
Bump, Ive got the same problem with my 06 4Runner. If there is a reset button in there somewhere, I can not find it. I have checked all 5 tires, and all are the same. However that light continues to shine bright. Is there a different protocall for the 4runner to get that light off?
Does anyone know how difficult it is to remove the wheels/tires from the '04 4 runner to do basic tire rotation or change brake pads without damaging the tire pressure sensors? The manual, of course, recommends that you go to a dealer for all tire work to avoid damaging the tire pressure sensors in the wheels. I don't think it can be that difficult..........
The TPM is in the valve stem and requires no more special care than any other valve stem. I wouldn't worry about it.
I took my 4Runner in for new tires yesterday evening and completely forgot about the sensors. Anyway to check them (other than deflating the tire) and are they expensive to replace?
I am late joining this thread - I recently got hosed by an independent tire shop: took my 2004 4Runner in for new tires (114,000 km on the OEM Michelin Cross Terrains), the tire sensors did not get damaged, but they broke off three of the inflation valves inside the valve stems. They blamed it on incompatible materials causing corrosion . Since the valve stems are integral with the pressure sensor, I now need to buy 3 new pressure sensors.
Is it true that WD40 is effective/recommended for loosening the valve stem prior to removal?
Ya, don't be a dumb-bunny like me and break off a sensor when removing a tire from the rim. The sensor is part of the valve stem (cheap plastic POS) and it don't take much to break them. Fix a flat is for a true emergency only; cause nothing but problems after it is used (sensors, out of balance, can't patch tire, ect...)
