Question Gear grinding noise when vehicle at a standing stall or rolls back

Hi,

I own a 2004 4Runner SR5 V8 2WD. Once in a while when I drive my SUV into my garage, you know from the driveway into the garage there is a small step or hump; if I don't give it enough gas, the vehicle try to cross the step then it standing stall or rolls back. My question here is that when the vehicle is trying to move up that step/hump and it stands stall or kind of rolling back, it make this weird grinding noise. I'm not sure whether it comes from the transmission or the rear end.

Does anyone hear this grinding noise on your 03-04 4Runner when your vehicle is in drive and you are going up a hump or hill and it stands stall or rolls back.

Is this grinding noise normal or should I bring it back to the dealer and let them check it out?

Thank you in advance

Jack

When I described the noise as being grinding gear noise, it may not be an accurate description. It rather sounds like loud rapid ticking noise. It happens every time when my vehicle is in drive, trying to going up that step or bump before my garage (my house is just a standard ordinary house with an ordinary garage) and I didn't give the vehicle enough gas and it stands there idling and making that strange noise until I press on the gas paddle harder to get it move up that step or bump.

I was wondering is this the hill-assist start making that noise or whatever feature in this vehicle.

Anyone has any idea?

Would someone with a 2004 4Runner V8 2WD, try to do the same thing I'm doing to see if your 4Runner is making that same noise.

Thanks

Jack

Sounds like normal operation of your vehicle's Hill Start Assist Control ("HAC") feature. This puts on the brakes for you if it senses the vehicle beginning to roll backwards. The noise you hear is the ABS pump working.

Karl,

The Hill Start Assist feature was my suspicion of making that noise, but I wasn't sure. Thank you for the confirmation.
