I just purchased an '03 4Runner that only came with one key and alarm clicker.
My local dealer quoted me $47.58 (key) and $144.52 (alarm); didn't provide labor charge for any programming.
Is there an alternative? Buying keys/alarm online and then going to the dear for programming. Is there a way to program keys manually (ignition trick)?

Hey leo,
If you've read this entire thread, you already know, that I work for a company which specializes in the "type" of key(s) you're in need of, which are simply known in the "biz" as Transponder Keys. Fact is, these key "are" [unfortunately] higher priced than a standard automotive key blank, because of the technology used in their manufacturing process. Each key head contains a "chip", which is read by the vehicle's on-board computer. If that chip isn't recognized, then the vehicle won't start, hence the "security" behind this technology. However, most dealerships use this as a simple lame-*** excuse in charging a small fortune for these keys, knowing they can get it. That's where the company I work for comes, by offering aftermarket options (i.e. keys)
If you read this thread, you also know, that there are [unfortunately] "some" automotive transponder keys, which simply can't be duplicated and have to be done by the automaker/dealership. We do our best to stay on top of this, but the automakers do have to advantage with "new" vehicles. At least for the first year or so.
Anyway, back to the point. On your '03 4Runner, according to our company info, you "can" have a key made by someone other that the dealer, using the OBPI code with an original key!! Usually that means, an independent locksmith who has the capability to "duplicate" transponder keys. The KEY word here is TRANSPONDER KEYS! Don't waist your time going to a Wal-Mart or other places like that, 'cause they CAN NOT do it... period! The only catch is... YOU HAVE TO HAVE, AT LEAST ONE ORIGINAL MASTER KEY. A master key, is a key that will unlock every lock on the vehicle (i.e. doors, back gate, glove box, console, etc.) basically... everything. Using that key, any locksmith "trained" in transponder key technology, should be able to cut as many key as you need. Also, those key blank heads (the black part) will not have the Toyota logo on them. If that's an issue for you, then you'll have no choice, but to use a dealer to have the keys cut.
As fars the alarm goes... I'm thinking that's actually, not a bad deal at $144.52. But there is still the issue of labor?! I could CERTAINLY be wrong here, but I'm thinking... if you can get a key from someone other than the dealership, you [in essense} should be able, to do the same with the alarm?!
Sorry I couldn't be of more help with the alarm...
Dave

Thanks for the info Dave. I actually found a alarm/remote for only $17 (not the $144), same model #, frequency, FCC, etc. Like you said, just need to get that programmed at the dealer.
As for the key, I'm looking around. Might just end of going to the dealer and paying $44 for an extra key. I'd hate to lose my only key and alarm pieces!
Do you know if they use different frequencies in Japan for their keyless entry?
I have in IS300 with a similar key and like having the key fob integrated into the key.
Yes it is "possible", but not as as a key fob/key combo?! Matter of fact, I've never seen a key like that! We don't even sell anything like that?! However, there ARE a lot of variables here, for this to work anyway. Such as: the model & make of the car, the year, the "type" of transponder chip used from the factory, do you have a master key, etc., etc. I would take this key to your local participating "automotive locksmith" and just ask. There "are" aftermarket key fobs, which can be "programmed" to many makes and models of cars and trucks. As far as the key fob/key combo, I kinda doubt it, but you'll never know for sure, unless you ask.
Hope this helps... at least a little anyway.
Dave

When I bought my Sequoie (used), it only had one master key and one remote key fob (or whatever they're called). I got another key fob off ebay and got a valet key made. But, now that I found this thread, I don't want to somehow lose that only master key and not be able to start my ride. I contacted my local dealer and I think they quoted me like $60.00 for another master key w/ the chip in it. Are you saying I can get it done cheaper elsewhere? Please advise.
are we talking about the key on the right that's $60.00 yikes i'll make sure not to lose that key for my brother solora...key on the left is my Tundra (no transponder) it's easier to spot when seaching for key's at family function's dam toyota i hate what you do for me too many in this family glad we drive different model's for that madder ..I dont recall the seq having a transponder key but it may have My gf former ride was a seq and it had a key similar to mine..

Is it possible that the codes and other information to make a master key would be available in the dealer's or Toyota's database ? That is, would this have been programmed in at the factory and could this information be retrieved by knowing the VIN ?
I dont want to argue. .... BUT.... The DEALER- DOES OFFER THIS SERVICE.
We here at the Dealer offer this service to those who have lost their keys.
We download info from a special Toyota website, and use the TOYOTA scan tool to flash the ecu (04 runner specifically, that we are talking about).
We dont replace computers on cars that cant be programmed thru TOYOTA.
We send those out to be FLASHED (unlocked )to a independant lock/key(you guys) place. Then WE (DEALER) reprogram new keys.
The dealers who said they couldnt do it, are either money hungry (wanting to sell stuff u dont need) or they are very UNINFORMED, just plain LAZY.
DEALERS CAN FLASH PROGRAM CERTAIN MODELS.
Would not have a problem being on your contact list for advice if your still interested.

FIrst, thank you for such interesting reading. I have the same problem with a 2001 LC. I bought it with only a valet key, no master. Do you know if ECU could be flashed?
I just lost the only master key to my 01 Highlander. Toyota dealer said $1300. New ECU, BIG FAT LIE. Researched on line found out ECU can be reflashed on all current Lexus and Toyota. Found a local locksmith in NC. $150 I removed ECU in 20 minutes. Took to Locksmith, reflashed and made 3 keys in 30 minutes. Went back to dealer where i had it towed to and put ECU in and drove away. What a crime. Be sure NEW KEYS ARE CUT FROM CODE OR YOU MAY HAVE TO FORCE TURN IGNITION FIRST TIME YOU START IT.
This is in the tsb area...... I honestly don't know anything about this and am only researching for a friend who lost everything but his valet also, so I sent him to the stealer with the following info. This would indicate to a novice that it at least has the potential to be reprogrammed with new masters.
9/22/2003 - All applicable Toyota Models. Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is a Toyota term used to describe integrated computerized devices responsible for managing the operation of a system or sub–system. For the purposes of this bulletin, the term “ECU” is used as a generic label for the following SAE J1930 standard references:
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Transmission Control Module (TCM)
or any other Toyota specific control unit
Flash reprogramming allows the ECU software to be updated for changes in vehicle calibrations without removing the ECU from the vehicle. Flash calibration updates for specific vehicle models/ECUs will be released as field fix procedures described in
individual service bulletins. This bulletin details the ECU flash reprogramming process and the applications within the Technical Information System (TIS) and the Toyota Diagnostic Tester used for reprogramming. Flash calibration updates can only be applied to the vehicle/ECU combination for which they are intended. ECUs have internal security that will not allow them to be programmed with another ECU’s information.
PS does anyone know where they hide the starter on the iForce v-8 in the sequoia?
PS does anyone know where they hide the starter on the iForce v-8 in the sequoia?
It is under the intake manifold
dreep423: Your Highlander has to have the right engine combination in order for the dealership to FLASH the ECU.
If it doesnt, then you are correct. They have to send it to and outside source (locksmith or electronics place) to have it flashed.
Your dealership was just plain lazy and a disgrace.
We use NEF's to send out all the ECU's we are unable to FLASH.
