Hey guys.
I need help.
I just got a 03 4runner from a used car lot and I just realized thAT i ONLY HAVE A GRAY KEY FOR IT!
Am I in deep trouble?????????
Do I need to take back this nice car and fihgt with the dealer or can I get a spare key for $100.00 or so!!!!!!!!
Help help help help...........
I have lost my master key and only have the valet key for my 2004 4runner. The shop says they cannot program a master from a velet key. Does anyone know what I have to replace so I can get this done? They say I have to replace the computer.
You will need to buy a NEW MASTER KEY. Then take all the keys you have and either go to a locksmith or the dealer. THE IMMOBILIZER ECU can be RE-SEEDED (re-programmed) to accept the master keys(black) and valet key(gray). You do not need an ECU.
On a 2003 4 runner it can be reprogrammed, But you'll need a master ( I recommend getting 2)and the valet which you have.

Thanks Mustang!
I hope you are rigth!
Going to the dealer this morning, hopefully I will get a new key made so then I can then relax and enjoy my new ride.
Ciao for now.
Gio.
Here is the result from my visit to the dealer!
About two hour of time waiting around looking at new cars and bored people, and about $250.00 out of my pocket for reprogramming and a new master key.
Not to bad! Hope not to loose the darn thing again.
Happy and safe driving everyone.
Gio.
Yes we FLASH(seed) the (04 runner) in house. Then program keys.
It has been a pleasure discussing this topic with you.
This sight (T.S.) is a very good place that we can all learn from each other.
There are alot of very mature & well informed people here, I consider you 1 of them.
Have a great weekend my friend.

This is quite an old thread so I hope you're still an active member. I just purchased an '07 Tundra 4x4 with the immobilizer system. The dealer I bought the truck from told me that the truck only had the valet key so I called the local Toyota dealer. The Toyota dealer plugged in the truck's VIN and told me that the key didn't have a chip and it would be a simple resolution. So I bought the truck and went to the dealer for some new keys to find out that the info on the truck was wrong and it indeed has chipped keys. Now they tell me that I might need a new immobilizer ecu and keys. Is this right or are they just being lazy like you mentioned earlier?
They are being LAZY!!!! Just about ALL 2004 and up TOYOTA's are RE-SEEDABLE.

A couple of months ago I bought a 2004 4Runner that only came with the valet key. I had absolutely no problem (aside from the cost) in getting the engine computer reprogrammed and two master keys and remotes made up at a Toyota dealer. They also reprogrammed the valet key, so I have a complete set of keys like new. With tax this all cost just shy of $600. So this can be done, and it can be done legitimately!

They are correct a 2000 4 runner is not re-seedable, it must have a new ECU.
Call 1-800-331-4331
Tell them you lost your keys. They should tell you to take it to a TOYOTA dealership. The dealership should order an ECU (TOYOTA PAYS), but you have to buy 3 keys and labor to reprogram them. The cost to you should be approx $300 and Toyota buys the ecu. I just did this for a customer yesterday. The vehicle has to stay at the dealership, they need to get the part number off of it and call Toyota to get this goin, along with all of your personal info.
Good Luck

I have a slightly different problem. I just bought a 2006 Sequoia. The delaer only had one key (it was a black master key) but told me that they would supply another one along with 2 "fobs". I asked for and paid for a 3rd key.
Now the fun begins. They (A Toyota Delaer) had an aftermarket service make the extra keys for them and somewhere between the 2 shops they lost the original key. No problem, they have the two aftermarket (programed as masters) keys. I told them I wasn't all that happy with the aftermarket keys as they are even bigger than the OEM keys and tell them that I expect at least one factory key as that is what I used when I test drove it.
So, they go to program the new OEM key and it won't accept it. They try to delete all of the keys from memory and start over and it still wont take it. They now think that there is a lifetime limit of 8 keys for this ECU and this truck mast be at that limit.
My questions:
1) is there really such a limit?
2) can this ECU be re-seeded?
3) would re-seeding solve this problem?
4) am I missing anything else?
I'm in the same fix as many of you, I just bought an 05 Sequoia with only the valet key. Dealer says Toyota might pay for replacement ECU if I pay for labor and keys, but it looks like they will just flash it. Is this correct? This shouldn't be more than an hour of labor, right?

Nope, The 05 Sequoia has a seperate IMMOBILIZER ECU and has to be replaced if you only have a valet key and want any master keys.
It is located behind the instrument cluster. Labor should be 1.5hrs + the cost of the 2 master keys, they can program your valet after they do the master keys with the new immobilizer ecu.

1: Yes, there is a limit, but ALL of them can be removed except for 1 master.
It is possible to register up to 4 master key codes including the registered key code.
It is possible to register up to 2 sub key codes including the registed key code.
This is a total of 6 and NO more.
2: No, it can NOT be re-seeded. The immobilizer ecu is a seperate aecu located behind the instrument cluster and has to be replaced.
3: No, re-seed can NOT be done on this model (Sequoia re-seed started in 2008
4: You need an Immobilizer ECU and I would recommend TOYOTA KEYS, most aftermarket keys we have found do not work.
