You don't have to worry your Tacoma uses the cheap style key design you don't have the smart key or the chip inbedded in the key. Go to a locksmith should be less then $10.00

you sure...I thought my tacoma might have the chip in the key....I'll call the dealership again and post back....I called last night but the parts department was closed but the guy on the phone said something about possibly a new computer and somehting about an engine imobilizer but he also said he was 90% sure that the 04 tacoma didnt have that....well see....I'll try some locksmiths too and post again

He is correct your 04 Tacoma does NOT have an immobilizer. The Tacoma 2005 and up has an immobilizer system. Pm me your VIN and I can check.
If you do have the IMMOBILIZER, it can be REFLASHED and there is no need to by an ECU, just another MASTER KEY and however many keys you want.

Ok, here one for you experts. I just bought a used 03 4Runner Limited V6. It came with a master key and key fob. However, the master key does NOT unlock any doors. It WILL start the car. The key fob does work on unlocking/locking the car. I copied the VIN number and took it to lock smith and he made a key without the transponder chip to see if it would unlock the doors. It will NOT unlock the door either. What should I do? Have the locks rekeyed to match the ignition key. Or just spend the money and let the dealer figure it out?

I would re-key the entire vehicle. It is a used vehicle and the previous owner may have lost his/her keys and replaced 1 or more of the locks then got rid of the vehicle. If you re-key then you are the only one with a working key.
Toyota sells a complete LOCK-SET for this vehicle, so all you have to do is swap out the locks and reprogram the ECU (this takes a Toyota Scan Tool).

Or just rekey the other locks to the ignition cylinder that works, this would be the easiest and chealest, you could remove the other locks and bring them to the locksmith for him to rekey and then re-install.
