4Runner Head Gasket Recall??

+1 for what Mustang said. That's BS, I can't believe they'd tell you that.

Well.. yes I can. Take it to a different dealer. The only way you wouldn't be eligible for the repair later is if they faked a repair order for it, said they fixed it, and submitted a warranty claim to Toyota for it. Toyota's records would then show that the repair had already been performed and you wouldn't be eligible for it again.

Hi guys,

My story is similar to tjelly's(below). I bought a '95 4runner a while back from one of the local auctions. Unfortunately I didn't notice the misfire until after I bought the thing. I did a compression test and one cylinder is at 10, while the others are right around 170. This car has 113k on the odometer and is in pretty good shape overall. Other then a possible/known headgasket issue, I don't see any other reason a Toyota will have 10 compression in one cylinder.

However, I called my dealer just now and basically got the exact same response as tjelly. My Vin# doesn't fall within the range of cars covered. It's build date is 3/95, but I'm not sure what date ranges are covered. Any help with that? Any advice on how to get this covered would be a great help.

If anyone of you can run the Vin# and see what you guys can come up with, it would be very appreciated:

I purchased a used 1995 4runner 3 weeks ago and now have a blown head
gasket. I am extremely upset because I have spent 5000$ of my hard earned

Yeah, it's not covered by the V06 (head gasket recall). It does have an open 50N though which is for the steering relay rod, also called a center link or drag link. The V06 covers late '90 to early '95 models, specifically vehicles made 1/90-10/94. If it's not within that time and the specified VIN range there's really not much you can do, sorry!

Thanks for the reply. I guess I am out of luck. I'll have to get the vehicle to the dealer for the other issue after I can get this current situation fixed. Thanks for the help though.

I was wondering if anyone was willing to run my VIN# on my 1990 4Runner for the head gasket recall.

Also, is there anyone who got their timing belt done at the time of service? If so, how much cheaper was it since they were arms deep anyways?

Your vehicle isn't eligible for the V06 (Head Gasket) Campaign. You do have an open 50N though. That's for the replacement of the steering relay rod, also called a drag link or center link.

I have the same problem other guys here seem to have. Bought my 91 4runner with 203.5k on it, headgasket is gone, bad compression in one of the cylindars. Dealer did the A/C and Seering rod services, but didn't mention the Head Gasket. Could you look up Vin JT3VN39W9M8029959 for me, and see if the Head Gasket has been replaced? Thanks so much! If it has, anyone out there have a decent option of what to do to not pay through the nose for a new engine or rebuilding the current one?

The head gasket problem was with the 3.0 not the 3.4. The 3.4s are pretty solid.

There was a recall on some of the 96 4runner's 3.4L (possibly others as well). Something about a head leak and/or coolant leak. I think it was a improper bolt torgue thing - this was a long time ago for me...

The 3.4 was a HUGH improvment over the 3.0 at least for performance. I had a 1990 4Runner and a 1996 4Runner.

3.0 is 150hp, the 3.4 is 183hp.
