Hey guys... I haven't been on the forum in a while because I sold my 4Runner and then subsequently got moved to a different dealership (same owner, different brand). I'm back with Toyota now and I'll be available if anyone needs help. A few of you guys had e-mailed me over the past few months and I've tried to help as much as possible but didn't have access to a lot of Toyota info any more. Anyway, I'm glad to be back with Toyota!

Like most people on this thread I've had problems with the head gasket on my 4Runner. I've called several dealerships and had them run my VIN number for my 4Runner. Each time they say it's invalid. I am curious as to why that is.

Pm me your VIN and I'll see if I can figure it out.

Hey for information on this. I called 2 of the dealerships here in town and My 1990 4Runner does not qualify... They do it by VIN#. I also called Toyota directly and they said the same thing.

Anyway, I'm looking at a 1995 4runner for sale but it seems to have the same blown head gasket problem. Anyone had this done recently, is the recall still being honored? Thanks for any help
Let me update everyone as I've had yet another personal experience with the late, not so great, 3.0 V6 and the infamous head gasket problem. I have a 1993 Toyota SR5 Xtra cab 4x4 Pickup which I bought used a few years ago. It had the head gasket replaced by toyota in 1998 for free, under the service campaign, after it severly overheated. Well it happened again about a month ago. No over heat, just started runnning a bit rough one afternoon then the next morning it billowed white smoke when I started it. I called the local Toyota dealer and spoke with a great gal who tried her best to help me out but after a week of back and forth calls she said Toyota Corp. was unwilling to do anything as it was already done once. They offered me a whopping 10% discount off the repair at their dealership. She said the labor is $1,400 (approx.) and the parts add another $300-$400. It sucks but what can I say the truck is 15 years old! I had a mitsubishi mighty max that blew head gaskets but they didn't do diddly to fix it. In any case the service campaign is still in effect but it's only for 3.0 V6 engines that have never had the head gasket replaced by Toyota.
Try calling Toyota directly... they paid for my head gasket to be replaced a 2nd time at $198,000.00 miles. If you make it sound good, tell them you are a die hard Toyota fan and it is all you drive but your dissapointed with the Head Gasket failure because Toyota never issued a permanent fix and so on. They will help! Toyota is great about taking care of their customers.

My '92 4runner may have blown a headgasket this past weekend. I purchased it about 7 months ago. I had heard that the head gasket was an issue with the 3L V6 but I bought it anyways. I guess I was fooling myself since my previous 4runner with the 22re was virtually invincible (only had timing chain problem but I changed it myself).
I'm going to get the VIN# off of it and visit my local Toyota dealer to see what they say. The mechanic I normally deal with says that it will probably be 10 hours labour which will cost more than the value of the 4runner so I may end up taking it off the road if Toyota doesn't cover it.
Everything is all set to go. My head gasket was never replaced for the original recall. and Toyota is going to do it for free. The recall was from 1998.
They're doing the work next week. I'll post again when everything is done.
Great to find this thread! I am about to buy a 11/93 4Runner and happen to have VIN. Can you also run this # JT3VN39W8R0141545. The motor has a pretty bad oil leak coming out of the passenger side head, right where the intake meets the head and block in the back. Hopefully this fix wasn't done and I can get a good repair and get the vehicle cheap
