I owned a 98 Tacoma, xcab, 4wd, SR5, TRD, v6 for 9 years. It was a 1998. Can't say anthing bad about this truck. Great gas mileage, bullet proof, great on and off road handling, can even corner, but the roughest ride of the 3. Great low end torque and good pick up if that makes sense. 145,000 when sold. 20 mpg average.
I still own a 96 4runner, SR5, v6, 4wd. I've had it for almost 10 years. It is a very comfortable ride. It has 200,000 miles. Can still go off road easily. Pick up is pretty good considering it is pulling a lot more weight. I am really surprised by that, but I guess the gearing might be a little different. Same engine as the 98 tacoma. 20 mpg average
I still own a 2004 Tundra. V8. 4wd, trd, access cab, limited, 100k miles. Obviously the most powerful of the three but worst on gas mileage. 15-16 mpg on average. It is as smooth as the 4runner. Seems like it faster than all 3 on the take off but I don't know for sure. If I had to bet I'd say there is not enough of a difference that matters.
It really depends on what you want because they are perform very well and are hard to part with. My 4runner mostly sits now and I sold my Tacoma a year ago and that was hard to do. But having 4 vehicles really doesn't make sense as I do now again. (acura tl and mr2 turbo)
