4RunnerGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota 4Runner.
This is a discussion thread titled "Next Generation 4Runners.", within the 4Runner forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I'm curious to see how much longer the traditional 4runner will be around. The third one has been phased out in favor of a large CUV, and the Explorer and Pathfinder are both slated to move to car based platforms. I'm not sure how 4runner sales are holding up, but I wouldn't be surprised to see if the Highlander simply replaces the 4runner altogether.
I don't think you will see the 4runner/gx platform die anytime soon. Perhaps in NA you wont see a 4runner but throughout the world they use that GX/4runner chassis all over the place. I am not 100% but I believe the FJ is also using the chassis or a least the same assembly line as the GX/4runner.

Former mid size SUV top sellers, like the Explorer, Pathfinder, and Trailblazer/Envoy/Ranier/Ascender/9-7x/etc are all dying.
Toyota has a very big advantage of the above. Toyota already had a crossover when the above started dying back in 2002. Also, Toyota is not burdened about changing over the production or build a new production line to make up for the dying 4runner if that happens. All Toyota really has to do is find something to do with the production capacity of the 4runner plant and they have world markets and depend to achieve that unlike GM/ford which only had USA.
Also, if Toyota correctly markets the 4runner they will have no trouble selling.
back in 04 when Sequioa sales started slipping. Toyota coverted the capicity from Sequioa to a new Double Cab Tundra...Same thing with 4runner...they could use the capacity to make a possible A-bat

Any brothers and sisters know what year the next generation 4runner will be release? The current 4runner body style does not look as good as the previous generation (my opinion).
I agree. I had an '06 that I traded on a Honda S2000 and a '99 4RNR. The '99 is a better looking SUV. I think the styling is timeless, kinda what an SUV should look like.
Umm. My girlfriend just bought a 2007 4Runner yesterday. The dealer was talking about how 2009 might be the last year of the 4runner, and that the Rav4 might take its place.
He stated sales were declining.
I got a brand new 2007 4Runner 6cyl sport. Sticker after some stupid dealer stuff was 33,800.
We got it for 26,350. had a few hundred miles on it, but damn they were just happy to move it.

Just my .02 cents.
Have you noticed all the 4Runners on the road since you bought yours? Toyota is not going to stop making them. I have had 3 Honda S2000's and I was told in '03, '04 and '06 that Honda was going to stop making them. And they are a limited production vehicle. The 4Runner will live on and believe me it won't be as a RAV4. As huge as the new Sequoia is Toyota will still need a true mid-size off roader in their stable.
Who knows what will happen. I love the 4Runner and hope that they keep it in the production lines, but like others were saying, it could get the boot in favor of the Highlander (a better contender than the Rav4). Toyota already has a true mid-sized off-roader--FJC. It's defintely not a more practical car than the 4Runner, but it is very capable off-road and does have sufficient room for everyday use. Toyota might be thinking that since 99% of the 4Runners never go off-road, they will do away with it for a better "city" car--the Highlander.
Like I said, I love the 4Runner, but with the Highlander getting the huge upsize this year, to me, it seems as though the 4Runner is getting squeezed out of the line up.

I just don't see it happening. The Highlander is a Camry chassis. The 4R sits up higher, has more true off-road capability, V8 capability and is visually more appealing in my mind. The FJ would be impratical for a car seat, hell 2 car seats in a 4R is tight with all the bags for kid stuff. I don't see the 4R being dropped.
If word comes out they are going to drop it, I'll go buy a new one right now and hammer the dealer on price becasue of it. Our 04 is awesome. I'll never get rid of that thing!!

What I'm saying is the new Highlander is BIGGER than the 4Runner, is just as powerful (even moreso than the V6 model), and is more comfortable on-road. THIS is what 99% of SUV buyers are looking at. The segment for buyers in the market for an off-road SUV with easy car-seat access is very small. I believe that IF the 4Runner were to be dropped today, most people would be fine with it. FJC for off-roaders (or even a 4-door Tacoma) and Highlander for soccer moms and average joes.

I gotcha. From a business perspective I can see it, but man I hope they don't drop it.

Neither do I. And honestly, I don't see it happening that soon, but if it did, I wouldn't be surprised. The 4Runner's been around since the mid-80's, so if anything, they will revamp it to make it much bigger (to perhaps fill that tiny gap between the Sequoia and Highlander?) to keep it in the line-up when the redesign comes for it in a year or so.
But what I really wish is for Toyota to make a hard top convertible 4Runner or FJC (in 4-door versions). THAT would be sweet. I've been eyeing the new 4-door Rubicons and keep telling myself that I've already been down the Jeep path (which wasn't pretty).
