4RunnerGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota 4Runner.
This is a discussion thread titled "Next Generation 4Runners.", within the 4Runner forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Any brothers and sisters know what year the next generation 4runner will be release? The current 4runner body style does not look as good as the previous generation (my opinion).
1.) 84 to 89
2.) 90 to 95
3.) 96 to 02
4.) 03 to ??
From the pattern above it looks like every five to six years, or by 2009.
Even though I own a 4th gen, I also like the looks of the older ones better. What I do like about mine is the increased interior space and I have your engine (4.7L) in it

Yep I love my 99 Limited Runner to death but I do wish it had "Your" motor in it (4.7)
I read about major redesign in 2008. The 4Runner will be getting smaller closer to Rav size. I also heard the Rav is getting redesigned and getting longer, wider, and more powerful.
Not that I've heard any news reports, but I doubt Toyota would make the 4Runner a unibody or smaller SUV. Then it'd just be something slightly bigger than the Rav4. I'm sure Toyota wants to keep some distiction between the two.
As for me, I'm partial to the 2nd generation 4Runners. My dad had a 91 that he had for about 9 or 10 years.
Well, I'm younger and happen to love the fourth gen. don’t get me wrong, all gen's are awesome and I may just be partial because I own a 4th.
I agree the 4Runner will probably stay in its current market. Appealing to a wide variety of people in that it has luxurious ride and look while maintaining it’s aggressive off road ability. Well rounded vehicle with great ability. The Rav4 and FJ are market specific where the 4Runner is more versatile. For example the 4Runner can be customized for the adventurous type like the FJ or tunes for more luxury to appeal to the business type with minimal lose in ability.
The 2007 Tundra is out. People say next year Toyota is going to redesign Sequoia, and 2009 is for 4Runner. I'd assume new 4Runner is bigger than the current one and should have an optional 3rd row...can't wait to see...
I think the current gen looks good, but I am partial to the 3rd Gen and personally think they're the best looking. There are a couple of things I don't like about the 4th Gen's. They made the rig bigger, which some people like, but I think they should've kept the overall size a bit smaller. The same goes for the current gen Tacoma's (5th gen). If people wanted a bigger ride, the Sequoia or the Tundra would be a good choice. The size difference is just too close, IMO, between these four vehicles.
The second issue I have is that they lowered the ground clearance by about 2". Huge downer for me. I also wish they would've kept the rear locker as an option. Their decision to forego that option in 2001 was a bad move (for enthusiasts, but I guess it made sense for regular grocery-getter/mall shopping folks). I, at times, wish I would've bought a 99 or 00 with an e-locker. Anyway, getting back on track, I know you can always remedy the ground clearance issue with a lift, but how a vehicle comes stock from the factory says a lot about the passion and the focus a company puts in their products.
I do like the engines in the 4th Gen's, though. I'd swap in a 4.0 V6 in my rig any day of the week.
But overall, there is enough aftermarket support for both generations to make them good off-roaders. You can't lose with either one. I can't wait for what the next gen will bring us. I just hope it's not bigger ext. dimensions.
When I bought my 4th generation 4runner I had been looking for a nice used 3rd generation 4runner. I, too, think the third generation was the best looking. But the thing that sold me on the 4th gen was the much improved interior. Sat in a friend's 3rd gen and the interior seemed outdated compared to the fourth gen. Plus the 4th generations have way more safety features on them than the 3rd gen.
