Default Easy DRL installation...

If any one is intersted in making their '06 4Runner Sport with daytime running lights, the instructions are as follows;

Remove the engine compartment fuse center cover.
You'll see this;

The blue relay I am pointing to is the "FOG" relay. Remove this with a pair of pliers (gently) and store in your vehicle.

This is a picture with the relay removed;

Get a 3" or 4" inch piece wire, strip the ends and soldier a flat spade terminal to each end.
Insert one spade terminal into bottom terminal (in the picture above) of the removed FOG relay and the other into ignition side (the empty space shown below) terminal.

That's it!
What's nice about this set up is that you are not cutting or removing any of the factory wiring. You are just removing a relay and installing a jumper wire between the fog light wires and the ignition side.

Now your fog lights will come on everytime the ignition is "on" or the vehicle is started.
PLUS, the "fog" indicator will illuminate in your instrument cluster letting you know they are on.

Looks like it is the same for the 2005 4-Runner. I was real close to this point. One change I might make is to add a switch on the lower left of the dash, there is a place for one. Then run two wires to the box and come in near the top(there is space by the box mount) and put the wires where you had the jumper. This way I can turn them off at night if I do not want them on.

What do you think?

A question:

Is the location that you are getting the 12v from Fused? It is the IG Relay location, which is empty as shown.
Why did you not use pin 5 of the relay? It is fused with a 15amp. Maybe it does not turn off when the key is off?

Yes, I suppose you could install a switch if you like but I like the idea of them "on" all the time. But it's personal preference I suppose.

And yes, it is the IG Relay location (empty) and it's fused with the 15A fuse in the cab fuse panel marked IG1.

Pin 5 is "hot" (12v.) all the time otherwise I would have used it.

Very nice write up. You may want to check your local laws. I know in Va it is illegal to drive with only your fog lights on. The factory DRLs on the 4 runner use the turn signal indicators.

Rob, I agree that one should always consult your local laws regarding DRL's or additional lighting.
Here in IL, there are no laws regarding DRL's as long as they are a factory or OEM lighting....aftermarket or additional lighting might be a different story though. All I'm doing is using the OEM lighting as DRL.
I had an '04 Highlander that had the low beams "on" (85% or so) all the (day) time for DRL's...factory installed. How would that play out in VA in regards to their laws?
Just curious...

I did install a switch to control the "fog lights" as described above. The switch is not an exact match but it works and has a light to tell when the lights are on. The switch could handle 15amps, but I connected the switch through the relay to keep the current down in the dash area. . The relay is not in the original socket but is secured inside the black box. The switch is from Toyota, part #00550-35976. You can see it at www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runner/tech/switch

I now have Daytime Running Lights that can be turned off at night if I so desire.

Thanks for the very detail initial information
