Default How to remove factory skidplate to change oil?

I was trying to change my oil on my 05 4Runner (4x4 V8), and could not get the skidplate that covers the oil filter off. From what I noticed, there are 4 12mm bolts that connect it. However, when I tried to remove the ones toward the rear of the plate, the wrench just clicked (similar to a torque wrench). I tried over and over on each of them, and could not get them to budge a bit, all the wrench did was click.

Any ideas as to how to get these things off? Also, can I just remove the skidplate and keep it off, or does it provide another necessary function? I don't go off-road.

The skid plate can prevent road debris from puncturing stuff like the oil pan, oil filter, & tranny lines.

If your ratchet wrench clicks then it does not work or you have the forward/reverse knob in a funny position. Just remove the four bolts. Use a breaker-bar or someone else’s wrench.

I used two different ratcheting wrenches, both did the same thing, and only on the two rear bolts. The forward/reverse knob was in the correct position. I guess a breaker bar would be the only way to go...

It shouldn't be that hard. Mine come off fairly easy although they seem to be more difficult as they get more corroded, but they are not any more difficult than any other bolt. If you have taken it to a quick lube place or to any auto repair shop for an oil change, they may have over torqued the bolts.

The skid plate doesn't do a whole lot. It is pretty thin. You could run with it off with minimal risk, but I don't know it if would be worth it.

I'm thinking I may just cut a 6" diameter hole near the filter, and leave the skidplate on.
