I just traded my 2006 4Runner Limited with 10K miles on a new Honda S2000 and bought a 1999 SR5 4runner with 113,000 miles for our foul weather vehicle. I can't get over how well it has held up after 8 years. The previous owner maintained it very well and did the major 90,000 mile service last year and new battery and tires this year.
BTW the '06 brought more on the trade in than the price I negotiated for the S2000! I loved my '06 but we missed our '04 S2000 that we traded to get it.
I went to AutoTrader and Cars.com to research used 4Runners and there are quite a few for sale with over 250,000 miles on them and still bring decent money.
03 Limited with 118,000 miles. I also had warped rotors but got them turned and the problem went away. No major repairs, just tires, brakes, and fluids.
Pretty solid vehicle so far, the only things I can see being a problem eventually are some of the things people have already mentioned. The electric lock on the rear hatch, the 4WD system (all electronic), VSC, Downhill Assist, etc... Also if you ever have a problem with the side airbags you usually have to replace the entire seat which is anywhere from $1800-3500 because most of those airbags aren't available separately.
'03 4Runner SR5, V6, 4WD, JBL, with only 11,000 miles on it.
Why such low mileage? My father bought it new, and hardly ever drove it. Just back-and-forth to the store. He passed away in January and I inherited it as part of his estate. After driving it from Prescott to our home in Grand Junction, we decided to keep it and sold our '06 Element.
It gets 19-20 mpg in town, and 21-22 mpg on the highway, which is about 10% less than the 4-cyl Element. Not bad!
Oh Gosh - 100K was some time ago. I've got 140k with no end in sight. The truck is tight as a drum and still runs so smooth, and to me, very powerful for a V6. The upside has been the average mpg - I still average high 19's to low 20's on 87 octane. Will this truck hold up> it sure will.
4200, 2008 4x4 sr5
moving to synthetic at 5k, hope to see a slight mpg increase.
avg 18 mpg now, not too bad since that is with the wife driving it. i think i could easily get 20 or more if she gets 18.
plan on keeping it for a long time. will consider getting a new ride in 5 1/2 yrs and giving this to my daughter when she turns 17. if not, the wife is stuck in it for at least 8 yrs, more like 9-10years.
