our family has a 2003 4Runner V8 with 70,000, only problems have been warped rotors and the fuel gauge went out, had it replaced under warranty. No clunks, rattles, or noises of any kind. Solid 1st year model, and I have yet to find another SUV with this kind of power and such excellent mpg...
My 97 4Runner just passed the 150,000 miles mark! The list of repairs is small. I have replaced the antenna mast several times. The Check Engine Light is on perpetually. I know it will last hundreds of thousands of miles more!!
I have a 93 auto V6 (I know we're talking 4 gen here...) but it's at 296000 km (183000 mi) original brakes (getting done this week), had to replace the tranny after lending it to my brother in law who drove around in 2nd (a**hole) and complained about engine noise!! He's a frekin engineering tech too... Burns a little oil, rust is starting, but the damned thing won't die. I have to do my belt now (it's showing cracks) and probably the master cylinder AND while I was in school I abandoned it in my sister's field for 3 1/2 years. New battery, inspection and it was back on the road.
We need a newer vehicle now and the wife wants a Nitro or Commander ( I won't buy dodgY vehicles) so I'm pushing the Tundra, Taco, 4gen 4Runner, or *sigh* the Pilot.
Any feedback?
Hmmm......haven't been so lucky with my 2004 V8 SR5. 135K.
Love toyota and always wanted a 4 runner.
Had a 90 tacoma that didn't give me a problem.
The 4 runner....either I got a lemon or they aren't made like before.
Lots of minor electrical issues, more of a nuisance to ID and fix. Who wants to visit their dealer so much.
Biggest problem right now...the electronic hatchback....replaced a motor ($400 part), and now it's flying open and refusing to close. NO MANUAL WAY TO CLOSE IT.(see my post for issues). No option to change to manual closing hatch. There is absolutely NO need for an electronic closing system...you manually pull the hatch down, shut it and a motor engages to lock it and hold it shut. When it malfunctions....you can't shut it!!! Which means you can't drive it (unless you like exhaust fumes and dirt entering your vehicle)....so you have no option but to buy the part, apparently over and over again. It lasted 3 years the first time, and now only months later here we are again.
The spare tire sensor doesn't work right, predominantly in cold weather....never has....dealer hasn't fixed it, I just keep bringing it in to shut the indicator light off or just drive with it on!
When the vehicle was a year old, it was making a clunk at certain speeds as you accelerated or deccelerated...sounded like a transmission problem to me........took them a year of trying this and that before they replaced the transmission under warranty. The drive shaft was changed in the process. Now a year later, starting off after stopping at an intersection, I'm occassionally hearing the clunk again....there won't be warranty this time.
The design of the 4 runner causes LOTS of dirt to be thrown up on the hatchback causing problems with the locks, window movement, wiper (just fell off the other day and costs $70 to replace without a new wiper blade!).
Now I'm hearing a rattling, grinding kind of sound if I slowly turn to the right....most recent and have to look into that.
Starting to get rust in a few spots on the body.......that's supposed to be good for 6 years warranty.......we'll soon see.
Now, because of the mileage, there is no warranty. It's mostly highway miles too but that means nothing. Can't see this one lasting to 300K.....without a lot of monetary input anyway.
Will the current 4runner be like that last generation....easily reach 300k miles with no problems. Has anybody here reached 100k miles?
Traded in my 04 with 60K miles on it, other than warped roters it was rock solid (V6 SR5). Than I got a 07 Limited with the V8. Miale is very similar, I still think I like the V6 better. The V8 creaps when the A/C comes on. Goes from 500 RPM to 750 RPM, but the transmission is much better at low speed then my 4 speed 04 was.
